TomSloan, your mention of Thoms reminds me that Danny Lockin played Barnaby in the film of Hello, Dolly! and then played the part on Broadway when Merman took over to close the show.
ETA that since posting the above I have found out that Lockin replaced Jerry Dodge in the OBC and then played the part on tour for several years. After doing the film, he came back to the Broadway production with Phyllis Diller and then Merman. So he didn't do the film first.

I am surprised no one mentioned John Lloyd Young of Jersey Boys in the upcoming film. I am excited to see this film.
You shouldn't be surprised.
We are not talking about actors who've played a role on stage and then get to reprise their role in the movie version.
We are talking about actors who've played a role on film and then get to reprise their role on stage.
John Lloyd Young doesn't fit the criteria.

The Gloria Swanson SUNSET BOULEVARD musical was recorded in the mid fifties as a concept album, although only act one was released at the time. The full "show" has since been released on Stage Door records.

I can't believe I didn't think of this one, because I saw her in it!
Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz."
It played the Muny-Starlight circuit (Kansas City, St. Louis, and probably San Diego). The show had an overhauled book, and it was god-awful and tacky. It starred the Hudson Brothers (musicians and TV variety show hosts, with one of them being the father of Kate Hudson).
But Maggie was the one and only wicked witch! She was divine.

Again this thread is about actors who played a role in a film and then played the same role on stage not actors who originated a role on stage and then went on to do the movie version.
And before anyone else posts it: The Broadway cast of RENT in the film version does not count either.
