I've been a big fan of the recording for as long as I can remember, but very little footage exists [sans Tony Award footage]. Why has there yet to be a revival for this show? It won for best musical, right? Did anyone see the show? Care to detail what the show was like?
The score was beautiful and should have won the Tony over Cy Coleman's score for "The Will Rogers Follies". Daisy Egan gave a wonderful performance as Mary. The set was one of the most haunting I've ever seen on the stage. But the show had a lot of detractors -- many thought the director was out her league, Mandy Patinkin seriously overacted his role (Frank Rich wrote: "Mr. Patinkin's vocal histrionics are calcifying into schtick."), Rebecca Luker, Allison Fraser and John Cameron Mitchell all got mixed reviews.
A West End production with a new director and cast fared better but it was still a financial failure.
The Tony Award for Best Musical that year went to The Will Rogers Follies. It was an exceedingly strong season for new musicals, as along with Secret Garden and Will Rogers Follies, the other best musical nominees were Miss Saigon and Once On This Island.
