It's Balagan. It'll be hyped as hell but ultimately not as good of a production as the material demands, which, being Seattle, people will think is the second coming.
The performances of all of the leads were outstanding. I was especially moved by Keaton Whittaker's performance as Carrie. She was a believable protagonist and I empathized with her throughout the entire show. Her voice was amazing. Alice Ripley was also, of course, incredible, as was Kendra Kassebaum, but it was Keaton who really stole the show for me. The actresses who played Sue and Chris also did a good job.
The staging worked for me during small scenes. Carrie and her mother's death scene worked for me because I was always aware of where the knife was in relation to the actresses. I liked watching Carrie and her mom fight and I liked watching Carrie finally take control of her life while getting ready for the prom. The scenes with Carrie and Miss Gardner were also very sweet.
I'm not sure if the bigger scenes didn't work as well because of the staging, or because the young actors, while very good compared to other young actors in Seattle, couldn't really compare to the caliber of the leads. While the opening scene was exciting, the prom scene seemed like a missed opportunity. There wasn't enough pig blood to properly douse Carrie and the stage. There wasn't enough of a change in the atmosphere between when Carrie was crowned and when she was covered in blood. Everyone's deaths (except Carrie and Mom's) weren't scary at all. I was also unsure of who was in on the prank. Was it just Chris, her boyfriend, and the girl that switched the ballots? Were there other people involved as well? I wasn't sure.
Some of the same glitches that happen during many first performances happened with this one. The sound was uneven throughout the show. The performance started late and the intermission was really long. With all of that said, I had a great time. I was rooting for Carrie all night, enjoyed many of the songs, and laughed when the book was too crazy not too.
There wasn't enough pig blood to properly douse Carrie and the stage. There wasn't enough of a change in the atmosphere between when Carrie was crowned and when she was covered in blood.
NOTE TO ALL FUTURE DIRECTORS OF CARRIE: It's about the blood, stupid.
