It was announced more than a year ago,... I hope the release is still on track

I'm wondering if maybe it's due to some legal matters. I'm sure the book names names which could get Larry and the publishers in trouble for slander and defamation. I'm wondering if maybe it's having to go through re-write/editing so that there's no law suit. I really hope they get it sorted out, whatever it is. I am very excited for this book. Really thought I'd have it this week.

In the weekly recap from Talkin' Broadway I received today, "What Were They Thinking?" is listed as CANCELLED. I had ordered from Amazon well over a year ago and was informed it had been postponed to April 22, 2014. Now it looks like it will never be released. Anybody know anything further about this? I was really looking forward to reading about this favorite terrible musical.

Have a feeling that Pitchford and Gore don't want some of these "stories" to ever get out.

It's probably just because who was going to buy it, exactly? The 150 people (including Cohen and his family) who still believe against all evidence that the show is any good? I say this as somebody who saw the original production and have been bragging about it ever since. If anything had ever come of the dreadful-sounding revival, MAYBE the could imagine there's an audience for this book. They probably just decided to cut their losses. For once.

There's probably some truth to that--especially with the Off-Broadway revision underperfoming (at least IMHO--but people can feel free to attack me.) The recent Spider-Man book came on the heals of a ton of fairly mainstream media attention.

Not sure, but you can get it new for half price in the remainder bins now...

In regards to the Carrie book--was it attached toa big publisher? Considering some of the obscure theatre and musical books small publishers put out that surely barely sell, I would expect one of them could put it out. Or not. (Song of Spider-Man is Simon and Schuster like Dress Circled Publishing who have recently put out some damn boring sounding Broadway related books.)

Carrie is supposed to be published by Applause Books, one of the largest theatre book oriented publishers. The author, Lawrence D. Cohen, wrote the screenplay for the original 1976 movie and he also wrote the book for the musical. So he should certainly know what went on behind the scenes. I'm guessing there's probably some legal problem that's stopping the book from being published. At least we have the hilarious account of the original production in "Not Since Carrie" (my favorite theatre book EVER).

Post mortem: Amazon emailed me the other day cancelling my order and stating that the book was unavailable. So I guess we'll never see this book and the saga will remain a mystery.

Speakeasy Stage in Boston is mounting a production, imminently. Carrie is being played by a really talented Junior from the Boston Conservatory. I still don't know if they can really make something out of this mess of a show, but who knows. Also, on Facebook, Speakeasy has a "Which Carrie character are you?" quiz. You'll never guess which one I got?

So, it's not the book, but maybe it'll scratch the itch?

This is really bizarre. You'd think, that if there were going to be legal problems, that they would address them before releasing it to be published.

I searched around the net, but was not able to find any updates. I can't believe this book was never released. Its not even listed on the Applause website.

They were probably counting on the reboot having an impact. Then they realized there's no audience.

"They were probably counting on the reboot having an impact. Then they realized there's no audience."

Then how do you explain all of the regional productions?

I'd be interested in knowing the number of regional productions, as well as their reception and financial success/failure. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more people interested in fixing or playing with a famous camp flop than there are who want to see it.

At least they cared enough to try.
