Theater award voters tend to vote for what they "enjoyed" the most. KINKY BOOTS has glitz and the heart and emotion that something like NEWSIES was sorely lacking in order to win Best Musical. I'm not surprised it's winning all of these awards, but I still think KINKY BOOTS and MATILDA are in a dead-heat horse race for the Tony at this point.
Glad Lane finally won!

I just saw The Nance and was bowled over by Lane's performance. A well-deserved win.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

Not to threadjack, but AC what did you think of Jonny Orsini? I thought he was sensational, but I know a lot of other people who thought he was awful and amateurish.
"I feel as if Matilda may pull an Avenue Q and take home the Tony."
^Early buzz would suggest Kinky Boots is the Avenue Q in the situation- everyone says Matilda is the lock i.e. Wicked, but now Kinky Boots is sweeping i.e Avenue Q

Wicked swept at the Drama Desk, Drama League, and the Outer Critics Circle. Avenue Q ended up taking home the Tony, so I feel as the tables may have made a 360 and turned back to Matilda being the one to bust Kinky Boots' bubble and take home the Tony.
WiCkEDrOcKS, I thought Orsini was phenomenal. And I loved the play overall. I'm planning to see it again soon.

Wicked won all those awards because Avenue Q was ineligible for everything except the Tonys, having played off-Broadway the spring before. Like Kad said, this is a different situation than the Avenue Q/Wicked year.

Kinky Boots keeps winning because Theater award voters are snobs, who don't like being told a musical is the best thing since sliced bread even though the musical has clear flaws, which is only is exasperated by cocky producers as well as creative teams who open a show not hoping to win an award,, but rather expecting to sweep the lot. They would rather award the more flawed piece simply because its handlers have manners and mind their p's and q's.
Also the fact that Kinky Boots has nearly 10 times as many producers than Matilda couldn't hurt it.
Could Lane win the Tony for this now? Typically (but not always) the Drama League winner wins in his/her respective category at the Tonys. Seems now to be a 3-way race between Letts, Lane, and Hanks.
But at this point, I think it's safe to say that even if Matilda doesn't win the Tony, that'll hardly kill its box office, yes?
Butters, go buy World of Warcraft, install it on your computer, and join the online sensation before we all murder you.

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
I also think that Brantley's overkill is rubbing a lot of voters the wrong way. If he'd just kept his big trap shut in the NYT Tony issue about his pet issue, voters might be more inclined to look on Matilda in a more favorable light. Hope the NYT realizes the errors of its ways and dumps Brantley ASAP.

It's not always the case. Alfred Molina didn't win. Nor did Liam Neeson. Although with Lane's victories here and at the OCC awards, perhaps he's more formidable than most assumed going in.

I was also shocked that Lane has never won this before. Can anyone recall who won the Drama League the year of THE PRODUCERS??? I was shocked last year when Audra won, because I had assumed she had won before too. But both are well-deserved!!!
I really don't think Brantley has that kind of power to influence the Tony voters to not vote for MATILDA because he's in love with it. I just think some people are genuinely enjoying KINKY BOOTS more, and are voting accordingly.
