And maybe it's in his contract that if he came over with the show he has to be nominated as a Lead, etc.

There is no way that is in his contract, because the producers don't have full control over the nominations. I'm sure it's in his contract to be BILLED as a lead, but there was always the chance (as I'm sure many people here thought) that the Tony committee would put him in Featured. Furthermore, no producer can guarantee any kind of award nomination in a contract. They might as well write into the contract that there shall be no traffic to or from the theater every night for the entire run, and that it will never rain.

Do lead and/or featured actors have clauses in their contracts like film actors which prevent them from doing dangerous off-time activities?

I don't recall anything specific, but there is definitely a clause about the actor being responsible for maintaining his appearance and health (weight, haircut, take care of your voice, etc.). I'm sure most people consider dangerous recreational activities part of that, but I don't know of any instance where it has actually come up. If an actor has a week vacation, could a producer stop him from going skiing? Or skydiving? I don't know.

I also saw the show in previews, and I think I remember his ankle wrapped.

That's what I meant Yero. Saying, bill me as a lead. And therefore, getting nominated as a lead.

As I said, I'm sure his billing was in his contract. Every single time an actor is billed above the title, it is because they negotiated that in their contract. But that is not entirely relevant to the question of his nomination. Plenty of people are billed above the title and then nominated as Featured, and vice versa.

Maybe it's in Bette Midler's contract that she is billed above the title. Maybe it's in Amanda Green's contract that she is credited as a composer with Trey Anasasio. It is just as relevant to the conversation.

Huh? She composed some music...so probably yeah, she's probably billed as a composer.... You're making stupid comments to justify an even dumber point.

It's a weak year for male performances, so why not throw him in the leading category? He's going to win regardless, so whatever.

Carvel is below the title along with everyone else.

But that IS my point. You say, "She composed, so of course she's a composer." Well, hearing "he probably has his billing in his contract!" is just as obvious, inane, and pointless to me, because billing is ALWAYS part of the contract.

It's a weak year for male performances, so why not throw him in the leading category? He's going to win regardless, so whatever.

Unfortunately, that's not how these decisions are based. A featured role is a featured role, no matter how weak the lead performances are. And I firmly disagree with the decision to consider Carvel as leading for the Tony Award, but my point in this discussion is that his contract has nothing to do with it, because the producers do not ultimately make that call.

But obviously, as it has been pointed out plenty of times, Featuring doesn't always mean "featured." It's wherever you get placed. Obviously they thought he was a lead, so they put him in the lead category. What's the argument?

I'm assuming the producers petitioned him for lead so that the guy playing Mr. Wormwood had a shot at a nomination. Carvel won as "lead actor" at the Oliviers but those awards, perhaps because of the lumping together of the genders into "supporting musical performance" (WTF, by the way), tend to put supporting parts into the lead category more often than the Tonys do, setting up Carvel's lead placement at the Tonys.

What I was trying to say was that I'm sure it was planned in his contract, etc, to be petitioned for lead, which is why he's in the lead category.

Do actors really have that out in their contracts? That's kind of strange.

Saw the show last night. Even better than I expected.
Since I was watching for it, I noticed that he had one ankle taped, but it was only noticeable in certain scenes. Either it was part of the costume, or the costume covered it up at times.

Either way, his performance was amazing.

Billing? Absolutely. The condition that the producers petition them for a specific category for awards? Not in any contract I've ever seen, although that doesn't mean that it would never happen. I still think it's unlikely, though.
