How is that even remotely appropriate? I love Underwood as a recording artist, but this is truly bizarre casting.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

this has trainwreck written all over it. Love Underwood, but she's not right for this.
A Chorus Line played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013.

This thread should prove quite entertaining...

I'll add to the general sentiment-This is going to be a disaster. A country singer as Maria von Trapp??? What next, Ozzy Osbourne as the Captain?!

Gotta agree here. Underwood is a phenomenal performer, but this just isn't right. There are PLENTY of vehicles they could try with Underwood (South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, hell maybe even Wicked) but Sound of Music? Sorry, gotta say PASS!

I like her, but if someone can actually explain how this casting makes any sense, that'd be swell.

She's a huge singing star with Teutonic looks. And she didn't sound terrible singing Hello Young Lovers on American Idol.

I'm trying...I'm trying...

Really? One of the oddest castings ever.

I'll bet you $20 she does this, it's incredible and the reviews are stellar.

ucr-I'll see your $20 and raise you another $20. She's gonna SUCK big time. She's an unproven actress who's not the right vocal type for the role.

I'd also like to add I see big ratings for this. Country fans turn out if you all haven't learned that yet.

Not the point. I don't care who watches if she sucks.

And NBC doesn't care if she sucks, only who watches.

Sidenote: Carlos, you should know by now people on BWW love an overly dramatic meltdown for something they have no control over !

Odd that two of the shows you listed (South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun) were both originally cast with Mary Martin, the original Maria Von Trapp on Broadway.

Annie Get Your Gun, yes, but if we're arguing about vocal type I can't say I see South Pacific working either. Maybe the odd song here and there, but overall, no. PS this is assuming she acts?

I think Carrie Underwood is a great performer in her field of music but I really don't know if her vocal chords can pull off Maria. Perhaps they may have to change the songs down a key. This casting just seems so strange to me.

How is a country Maria any more bizarre than a British Maria, or an non-country American Maria? Unless an Austrian singer is cast, whoever they hire will be the wrong type.

When did this become about accents? Have you ever heard a country singer? There's little to substantiate that stylistically, this is going to make sense. Style & tone = / = accent. That's just ridiculous.

I doubt any of you have gone to one of Carries concerts but its an incredible show. She puts alot of energy to making it perfect and I think she'll do the same with that. Even thought she can clearly sing I am sure she'll work with coaches to make it perfect.

As skeptical as I am about this, I will say: the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization is fiercely protective over the R&H catalogue, so I would venture to guess Underwood had to audition to get estate approval before they allowed her to be cast in this.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
