I'd rather see someone like Bill Murray as the Mysterious Man, if that role still exists in the screenplay.

Which it does. Sorry. It's labeled as "Baker's Father", so I missed it.

By inspired casting, I meant from a business viewpoint the decision to cast Streep means they can have their choice of A-list actors for the other roles who will jump at the chance to work with Meryl Streep.

You don't think Streep can be glamorous enough for the transformation. I have one name for you -- J. Roy Helland.

Agree that Toni Collette needs to be cast in a musical movie. She may also be the only actress in the world I can see playing either The Witch or The Baker's Wife brilliantly.

Arianda is about to play Janis Joplin in a movie. Word is she's an amazing singer and is clearly about to be a film star. I would love to be at this reading just to see her.

Corden can do no wrong.

I read the first two pages and then skimmed the rest. This is in response to Besty:

I'm assuming the "screenplay narrator" is the guy who read the

"INT. BAKER'S HOUSE - DAY

BAKER and his WIFE sing."

I'm hoping that's not how it goes.

AND YES ON MERYL AND TONI!

So how was the reading? Anyone at it? Anyone know anyone who was?

"As others have said, this was a reading simply to hear the screenplay out loud. They needed mostly theater professionals because they needed people who could learn the material fast."

Don't forget, though, about the all-star readings they had of the earlier script for a movie (back when Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel who wrote Splash did the script).

Eric, that reading (when Penny Marshall was attached to direct) was just of the actual screenplay itself. This reading was both Lapine's screenplay and the score. The musical element is why they used an entire cast of performers with a theater background.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Thanks for your correction--I didn't realize that they didn't sing in the early reading.

Jennifer Garner for the Baker's Wife... and before you snicker:

I think she would be perfect for the role... and especially nail the emotional aspects of it.

I have heard James Marsden and Emma Stone were offered roles. And Megan Hilty.

I think Sandra Bullock would be great as the Baker's Wife if she didn't have to sing. Sandy can't sing. She's said so many, many times. She would never take the part even if it were offered to her.

I'm guessing they will go with whoever is the "hottest" at the moment who can sing and is somewhat (at least) right for the role. I would look for "star turns" in the Witch, and even perhaps the Narrator. The Baker would probably be a film name, but not necessarily a mega-star. Assuming it's a name, I would love to see someone like John Cusack or Robert Downey Jr.

I also hope they don't cast the Baker and his wife too young, meaning early 20s. I would rather see late-30s, to 40s even if the Baker is supposedly Rapunzel's brother. But if they take that info to heart, look for younger leads ... like Jennifer Lawrence and Jake Gyllenhaal. Or ... the other Gyllenhaal (Maggie, who has the perfect look for the Baker's Wife, IMO) and James Franco.

As far as the Witch, I'm still in the Zeta-Jones camp. I think she has the perfect combination of beauty, eccentricity, talent, and a dangerous edge to her work as a film actress. She's my #1 pick.

I'm really digging the idea of Kristen Wiig, Maggie Gyllenhaal or Julia Louis-Dreyfus (-10 years) for the Baker's Wife.

James Marsden would be a wonderful Cinderella's Prince.

I think the only person I am a fan of on there is Megan Hilty.
I partially dream casted this a while ago, and this is what I got.

Little Red = Ariana Grande
Florinda = Laura Bell Bundy
Lucinda = Megan Hilty
The Witch = Kate Shindle, Queen Latifah
Narrator = Julie Andrews
Jack’s Mother = Olga Merediz
Cinderella’s Stepmother = Michelle Pfeiffer

Okay my witches choices are different but I would like to see how they would play the part.

When hell freezes over, that is when Becky Gulsvig will be considered for a film such as this.

Sorry to rain on parades, but the casting is completely irrelevant. Directed by Rob Marshall, this film (God forbid it ever actually comes to fruition) will be an abomination, as were CHICAGO and NINE. Just sayin.
