A nice increase for "Chicago". "End of the Rainbow" needs more people, obviously. from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Poor Porgy without his Bess! She returns, hopefully thier numbers will return.
Nice week.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I do worry for Evita when Ricky Martin goes on holiday as it'll likely fall under $1m and Nice Work also had a dip as well which is strange, Once continues to do great as is Newsies.
Wicked while still one of the highest grossers hasn't been at 100% for a while although I doubt the producers care with $2m gross this week.
JCS did better than Ghost and still closed. I have been worrying about Evita for a while - even with Ricky the ticket sales were dropping. Maybe they should do a disco version of Buenos Aires or something.
I don't think NICE WORK really has a draw for those outside the theatre community. I expect it to continue to drop. I don't really see someone going to New York to see it and the title and poster aren't that attractive either. I couldn't see a tourist choosing it over most of the other shows open.
Wicked is also in the 2nd largest theatre on Broadway. It's a tough house to fill to capacity, but even then it's selling thousands of more seats than most other shows.
JCS only "did better" because it was closing week. The fangirls and those that have been meaning to go would have been out in droves. Even at that, they were only at 75% capacity (ish).

wasn't O'Hara out of Nice Work all week?? It's fun watching the battle between Newsies & Once each week. Less than $10,000 between them. Ghost needs to close by Labor Day, it's barely bringing in $500K+, it'll do terrible numbers if it's still open by the Fall.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
This past Fri END OF THE RAINBOW had slightly over 300 in the house with the balcony closed. Sat mat the balcony was closed as well, with a very light mezz and a not full orch.
Seems GOLDEN BOY will be the next tenant at the Belasco.
The financial problems that started in 2008 seem to be catching up with Broadway these days. No longer is there money to put into a show, and no longer are producers willing to keep pumping money into a show that is limping along. Finally the idea that it makes no sense to keep losing money week after week is beginning to sink in. Even Disney/Dodger Endemol got it with SISTER ACT.
It just makes more sense to be a little more careful with money these days.

This is very true. I went out and saw Jesus Christ Superstar and The Lyons this week because it was closing week for both and I hadn't gotten around to it.
It's summer. There are always heat waves. If you are on vacation, you deal with it.

True. And the "touristy" shows are doing well.(ie. Wicked, Lion King, Spider Man, and such.) I am more referring to those living in and around the city that go to the theatre more often, might just stay home on a Saturday or Sunday rather than going to the theatre or traveling into town for a show.
Not enough to make any real difference. Not too many shows came down this week...and most that did were minimally.

While EVITA had a drop, let's not loose ourselves. It still made well over a million, it's fine.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Harvey's reviews were good but not raves, I agree that Jim Parsons is the draw plus it's a limited run that isn't going to extend so the grosses are going to be great for the rest of the run. I imagine Roundabout are thriled with these numbers.
