Cuz everyone's saying she's fixin' to snatch the Tony from that bag on the 10th. I hope Jan puts a mousetrap in there to stop her.

I think Audra's had it for a while, already made a spot for it on the mantle and been polishing it as well.

I've seen both and, good though Maxwell was, Audra was sensational. Jan's turn(s) will come. The right show (preferably something original) and the right time. Just not this time.

Having seen Audra 2 weeks ago, and seen Jan lat September and again the other day....

I feel terribly sorry for Jan, she gives an astonishing performing [that most other years will be a guaranteed award], but nobody [!!] could beat Audra as Bess. Audra is DEFINITELY going to win the Tony, there's literally no contest. None at all.

Thanks?

What about Danny Burstein and Norm Lewis?

Jan should win. Audra will. Jan brought humanity to Phyllis.

And Outoftowner2, Norm's great. Sweet man, good actor. But Danny Burstein reinvented Buddy. He SHOULD win and I'm beginning to think he will now too.

jv-I think it's either going to be Steve Kazee or Danny Burstein. While I love Once, and Steve Kazee was very good, I feel like you about Danny's performance-he was revelatory in the role. I really didn't like Buddy as a character until I saw Danny play him-he made me feel the character's pain in a way no other actor had.

I'd hardly be disappointed if Norm Lewis won, though-I've loved his work for years and his Porgy is very, very good, indeed.

The producers are really pushing for Danny Burstein. There was a huge profile about him in the Los Angeles Times either earlier this week or two weeks ago. Apparently LA, like NYC, is really taken with Burstein and he's been getting a lot of offers from Tinseltown.

I love Danny Burstein-he's very talented and I think he deserves the award-make no mistake. They've also been pushing Kazee for Once, so I think it could be tight.

Burstein was great. He should win. I doubt he will, though. Kazee has momentum.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

The words "Pushing", "Steve Kazee" & "Tight" all in one sentence is absolutely delicious.

Audra has yet to win for Leading Actress in a Musical, therefore, I believe Audra's time will come when she takes home the Tony on the 10th

I saw both leading ladies and I was ultimately blown away at Jan's unforgettable, heartbreaking performance. Audra's performance was a spectacular display of everything the American musical theatre craves, and she truly embodies Bess each performance. There's no doubt in my mind that it will come down to these two ladies.

And since Porgy and Bess will take the Actress in a Musical slot, I believe it's Burstein's time to win the Actor in a Musical. I've seen all leading men up for the award (except Jeremy Jordan) and I find Burstein's performance to be the breakout, powerful performance of the season. I've seen each of his Broadway credits since Drowsy and this time he truly deserves that trophy (and I think he should have won back in 2008, too).

I expect/hope that Phillip Boykin will win for Best Featured Actor, too.

Jan should probably put her bag somewhere safe next time.

Can someone explain the whole "Jan's bag" thing...I've delighted in the talk for some time and now would like to know it's history.

Best Actor has had Burnstien as the front runner since Follies opened, he was knocked down to a neck and kneck by Jermy Jordan when NEWSIES opened, and then Jordan was kicked out of the Broadway "IT" boy spot by Kazee when his mother died, and now Burnstein in the clear front runner with Jordan reclaiming his title as the new Broadway "IT" boy through his winning of the audience voting awards, and it is still possible for Kazzee or Jordan to pull an upset.

Every one of the 32 times Jan has been nommed people say it's in her bag, but somehow her bag has stayed empty, And that's become a running gag.
This year, alas, her bag will go empty again except for a few peanut shells, but that's another story.

It was the awkward wording of a thread title that started the meme. It read that Jan Maxwell had the Tony "in her bag" instead on in "the bag". It invoked an image of Jan running around shoving Tonys in her giant purse.

I saw both. Definitely Audra.
Jan was fine, but that bad dance number did her no favors, and it was a little bit of an over the top performance for me, not subtle at all.
Audra is a sensation, no matter what you think of the production. It's a master class in how to ACT a singing role.
That said - I agree with the previous poster here who is hoping Phillip Boykin will win!!!! He is astonishing.
