Been listening and watching old clips of this show and it does surprise me that despite debuting in the decade dominated by megamusicals like Cats, Les Miserables and Phantom, it managed to have a great run both on Broadway and in the West End.
I wasn't old enough to see the original production at the Drury Lane but my parents did and loved it. It's a shame that there has yet to a revival in the West End, I'm sure it would do quite well.
I haven't seen it, but grappling whether to see the UK tour?
Yeap the revival won the Tony, run for 1541 performances in the second largest theatre on Broadway at the time and still lost money!!! So what went wrong
The UK tour is most definitely not the broadway show standard. It might have a bit of the set. Not a favourite of mine but if you like old fashioned musicals with a thin plot but good tunes it's worth a look
The new tour heading out has more of the set and costumes from the broadway revival alongside the director of the revival. Let's hope it's better than the previous!
The Broadway revival nearly came to the Apollo Victoria but it fell apart.
The new tour heading out is hoping to come in for a run...
I wonder if the fact that the Broadway revival didn't recoup will prevent producers doing a full scale revival again, it's been done regionally in Chichester and Leceister but on a smaller scale.
Whoa! I can't go along with that. I thought the Broadway revival was sensational. As someone noted it was huge - the biggest cast since Ragtime which it followed into the cavernous Ford Theatre (as it was then known) right on 42nd Street. That it filled the place for so long is testament to its popularity.
