nice article.

First spelling of his last name (in the body) is missing the H.

I wanted to puke when I got to the paragraph about how he was spiritually immature when he signed on for Weeds and the regrets he has because God didn't choose that path for him. But I didn't let myself puke because AppleCare doesn't cover puke damage. There's almost nothing worse than a sanctimonious blond twink.

Seriously Dollypop. I guess I appreciate you got him to say these things out loud, but he's just a half step away from being the next Kirk Cameron. As for your article, it's put together well (although I might take issue over your conflating Godspell Jesus with Superstar Jesus), but the things he says, whether or not he said them with a smile on his face and the light catching his highlights just so, make him sound insufferable. It's 2012, and he's wrestling with his conscience about appearing on "Weeds," but ever so pleased that it has given him the career he would never have had without it? It's like reading an ex-gay talking about how happy he is with his ex-lesbian wife.

It's rather sad that someone who expresses his religious beliefs is considered "self righteous" in our society. Hunter considers himself a LIBERAL Christian and is far more open-minded than Kirk Cameron.

As far as conflating Jeff Fenholt, I just used his quotes as jumping boards for further discussion. Now, if you want to talk about someone who is truly self righteous, it's Fenholt. I was set to do an interview with him a few years ago but after a few minutes on the phone with him, I ended the conversation. I don't know whether it was his newly found conservative Christian beliefs or the excessive drug use in his youth, but he rambled on about Obama being the anti-Christ and how our society is going down the drain. I'll be perfectly honest, I couldn't untangle what he was saying after listening to the short tape.

No, Hunter Parrish gave me the impression of someone who has a healthy view of Christianity and is trying to make sense of his newly embraced religious beliefs and a contract he signed early in his career.

Oh stop that!

The kid's only 24 years old and you're pegging him as a bigot.

When did "Christianity" become such a dirty word?

Yes, yes, I know, the proverbial last group on earth it's okay to say negative things about.

I don't really understand why you are having difficulties with people having negative reactions to the content of what Hunter Parrish said to you. Perhaps the average reader, reading the flat text on the screen and without the benefit of being dazzled by the youth and blinding white teeth of Mr. Parrish are better able to actually "hear" what it is he is saying?

I love that you're defending his "beliefs" when these beliefs don't make any sense. He knows God couldn't possibly have wanted him to do "Weeds" for no apparent reason (because God's against a plant he created?) but Hunter and the Big Guy upstairs are, what?, perfectly fine with "Spring Awakening"?

Being 24 is not the same as being 12, and really, only a frigging 12 year old is going to get in a fight with a director over Jesus kissing Judas in "Godspell" because "THAT didn't happen"! Really, he comes across as insufferable in that moment. Not because of his "beliefs," but because of his attitude.

But speaking of his beliefs, how much of a sell out is he to continue compromising them for money? Maybe he should sing "Alas for You" while gazing into a mirror.

Really? Because that's not what I got out of it.

You didn't answer my question about when Christianity became a dirty word.

It seems as thought the athiests and agnostics here love to pounce on anything to do with Christian beliefs. The Gospels of Christ aren't what some Fundementalists interpret them to be.

Actually, I think Godspell's traditional use of the Jesus kissing Judas scene is one of the simplest and most beautiful distillations of the Christian message put on the modern stage. That the twink they hired to play Jesus not only doesn't get that, but fought against it, is why he comes across as insufferable. It's HIM, not his beliefs.

I didn't answer your question because it is a false premise. Christianity is not a dirty word. It's in fact the central litmus test in American culture, used to silence and bludgeon those who would disagree with conclusions like those Hunter Parrish arrives at. You're the one invoking atheists and agnostics, but he's the one who comes off as a bit daft in his "beliefs."

FindingNamo is just trying to say that Hunter hasn't reached the Kristin Chenoweth level of Christianity.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
