I'm not sure what you mean. Sondheim's Off-Broadway production of ROAD SHOW was recorded and there was already a recording of its earlier incarnation (Bounce). Sondheim is a different story though.
There are uncredited commercial producers who have financially "enhanced" this production. Theoretically, they could contribute to the costs of recording a cast album, but I don't think we'll see one.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
Perhaps I am overly optimistic and naive but I'm surprised that you guys think the chances of an album are so low. The show has never been recorded before and is an infamous cult classic. If they are planning to licence the show a recording would be helpful. Also, the show seems to be almost selling out every night and selling all of the premium tickets, which can't hurt.
Someone somewhere (even if the creative team) must be willing to shell out for a cast recording...
Less notable off-broadway musicals are recorded all the time.
I wonder if a Broadway transfer is being considered and whether they would wait though etc.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I'm fairly certain that I've read that they will, in fact, be recording this show. I can't remember where I saw that though. To be honest, it'd surprise me if they didn't record this production.
I would imagine, especially this show, it depends a lot on the reviews (I would think the creative team avoiding Broadway over the years was because of those awful, awful reviews) and if the creators think "this is the version" in stone.
