So what is everyone's thoughts on the Whats on Stage award winners?
Was surprised that Sheridan Smith didn't win in the Best Supporting Actress category - she was a million times better than Catherine Tate.
Also, dissapointed that the Tate/Tennant Much Ado About Nothing came away with Best Shakespeare production. I thought that was the weakest of the nominees in that category.
Good to see Matilda and One Man, Two Guvnors doing so well though - both richly deserved.
Yes I know, I was shocked, but over it now, Cassie Levy or the Matilda's should of got it, but whatever! However I do think Nigel Harman was worthy of his.
Pleased for Vanessa Redgrave who was superb in 'Drivin' Miss Daisy' and another one of out National treasures. 'One Man, Two Govenors' and James Corden/Oliver Chris was well deserving of theirs, so was 'Ghost' and Richard Fleshman. Absolutely delighted for Matilda, which is one of the most original and best score I have heard in a long while, should of got best staging too, as so very original.
Pleased Hannah Waddingham got best supporting actress, however Wizard of the Ox wasn't worthy of best revival, proof that these awards are voted on by the younger generation. The best revival should of gone to South Pacific.
No matter what the rewards are they all tend to be floored in someway:
With Amanda Holden winning this, moreproof is in the pudding that the awards are voted by younger people who would tend to use the internet that the older generation.
With critics awards, these are judged by people who tend to be 'OxBridge or Ivy league' educated and their vote tends to be on the side of the elitist and highbrow.
The Olivier Awards tend to be stuffy and more biased towards the play.
The Tony Awards although it has the best structure out of all the awards, but however dogged by commercial greed, theses awards are about bestowing awards on to productions that will put money in pockets of regional theatre owners and producers, hence you never really get a show win a Tony if it has shut.
However all awards have one thing in common, they are all very subjective.
I dont have an issue with Richard winning but Amanda is ridiculous and a bit of a surprise considering Ghosts following. Biggest shock of the night was what Kerry Ellis was wearing
At least the Oliviers try to provide a degree of democracy by inviting ordinary people on the judging panel, (albeit ordinary people with a lot of spare time).
These awards are about as credible as that TV top musicals programme that put Grease at number 1!
Its all younger voters or WOS are fixing them so shows that are open with budgets to spend advertising their win.
Strongly agree with you on that one and it didn't occur to me the commercial advantage with advertising.
Peter Darling best choreographer? Was there any dancing in Matilda except for that god awful salsa song "loud" ?!
Mildly disagree with you on this, although the movement is no where as good as Billy Elliot, which is unsurprising as Billy was a blank canvas, which the subject matter was so irresistible to exploit to the full and that is exactly what Peter Darling did. Billy Elliot has the best chorography of any musical in the history of theatre and Peter is indeed a ingenious.
Matilda is a different kettle of fish and the opportunity doesn't present itself as readily as Billy Elliot, it is still to a high standard, the choreography on 'when I grow up' with the swings and the gymnastic scene are both very clever, original, creative and enjoyable.
