Not do well? I think it's potentially the next big blockbuster musical. If marketed properly, I see a healthy 5-year run.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

No, it wasn't set for Broadway. No one at Papermill knows how that rumor got started. In my opinion, the show was good as a regional production, but is nowhere near ready for Broadway.
They should stay with their original plan, it's a good show for regional and schools (where the girls can Chaz Bono it up and play the boys). After all the hype I was kinda disapointed, when the Newsies were onstage it was very entertaining but the rest didn't hold up for me. And Jordan is too old for the part, despite his looks and charm.
I never trust Twittering for truth. Not every show has to be on Broadway, the target audience (teenage boys who love to dance) are not gonna keep it running 5 years, or even 2 years.
It would do well touring, but I'm not sure it would last more than 2 years on Broadway.
