It's pretty good. As far as any noteworthy shows I've seen from GoldClub: All three NORMAN CONQUESTS, IRENA'S VOW, ACCENT ON YOUTH, AS YOU LIKE IT (BAM), WHY TORTURE IS WRONG...AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM, ORDINARY DAYS, IN THE NEXT ROOM, TITLE OF SHOW, and FUERZABRUTA.
Some other stuff, like THE GLASS MENAGERIE, JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE, THE ROYAL FAMILY, THE AMERICAN PLAN, THE UNDERSTUDY, STREAMERS, TO BE OR NOT TO BE, FINIAN'S RAINBOW, WISHFUL DRINKING, DISTRACTED, PRESENT LAUGHTER, WAITING FOR GODOT, HEDDA GABLER, and THE 39 STEPS, has popped up too. They tend to have lots of Roundabout stuff. They've also had interesting talkbacks/interviews with people ranging from Twyla Tharp to Laura Linney to Carrie Fisher to Sam Mendes to Tyra Banks. And other celebs I can't remember.
I'm thinking of joining Play By Play as well, which recently has had stuff like IN THE HEIGHTS and LOOPED, both which I have yet to see pop up on Gold Club.
It's definitely worth joining. I think of it this way, for the price of one full-price ticket, I got to see like six or seven shows last year. And passed up tickets on a few others that I regret ignoring. And the people working customer service for Gold Club couldn't be nicer.
I am in p by p, gold club + theater extras. I find each one worthwhile. gold club's shows stay up on the board longer than p by p before they sell out, which is to yr advantage. I'd wait to join for when they are giving 2 free tix to a show you want for new members- see their home page- currently it's la cage aux folles- these offers tend to last 2 or 3 weeks and then a new show replaces it. each service tends to get some shows/thtrs the others don't.
WickedRocks...thanks for the response....I signed up last week and am getting 2 tickets to La Cage Aux Folles. I also got tickets to see Richard Lewis last Friday and The 39 Steps tomorrow night. So far, I am happy with it....I was just wondering what to expect.
i don't really find real value-for-the-money with Gold Club. Twice I got tickets to something i had been planning on seeing ('reasons to be pretty' and something else), but that's about it.
Just curious....I'm a member of P by P and AE..... lately AE hasn't been that great, even though I got tickets to FELA! through them. P by P seems to have more musicals.....heck, I missed getting tickets to the opening of RAIN (this one pissed me off the most).
I am seriously thinking of joining one of the other two services......TE or Gold.....which one offers more musicals, if they do......does Gold discount other shows. Right now they are offering 2 free tickets to Bete. When the offer the free tix, where are the seats? TIA for any info.
Based on my experience, the gold club offers very few musicals. I mostly use them for straight plays and comedy shows. They have had In the Heights and the Fantastiks a few times, but those are the only musicals I can remember seeing in the last year or so. When I joined, the free tickets were to Chicago, and we were around 12th row center orchestra. When my stepmom joined, the offer was for Bye Bye Birdie, and I know she was in the orchestra, but I don't know where. I've really enjoyed my experiences with the gold club, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are mostly looking to use it for musicals.
Thanks. The one thing I forgot to mention is that AE has a connection to Town Hall shows.....I have seen several there and this weekend Betty Buckley's concert and two other Broadway Best ofs were available. Also picking up tickets 99% of the time are at the box office never in another location.
I agree with Gary Indiana about the lack of Musicals and popular shows on Gold Club.
I recently joined Bargain TKTS (http://www.bargaintkts.com) and they have 30% - 50% off all the most popular shows now. I just bought discounted tickets to La Bete and Spiderman. Well worth the $5 or $10 membership.
How is Bargain TKTS better than simply getting these codes for free on the Broadwaybox, Playbill or Theatermania websites? And they actually charge you to join? Maybe I'm missing something here...
I am a member of gold club and theater extras and both have been very good, but for both I have rarely seen many musicals. I have gone to lots of plays through them (Collected Stories opening night for Theater Extras, as well as Brighton Beach Memiors) I just saw Wings with theatermania goldclub and In the Heights (the only musical I have seen with either)
Also, as far as the townhall connection goes, Theaterextras also had tickets to all of the townhall events this past weekend including Betty Buckley.
When I joined, I got orchestra seats to Promises Promises which at the time made it well worth it anyway. They may have less Broadway shows up, but if you can get tickets to a show you wanted to see anyway (and in my case not find any real discounts to see the show otherwise) it is worth it just to get the tickets alone. Earlier today and yesterday they had Lombardi tickets up.
What I want to know more about is Audience Extras? I really haven't heard much about this one. Do they have more musicals? Are they worth getting over all of the other services?
Play by play continues to be something I feel I should get as well.
Regardless I am very happy with both that I have. I am headed to brooklyn to see Brooklyn Omnibus from Heidi and Stew of passing strange and could not be more excited about it!
Instead of waiting, we got TDF tickets for Me, Myself & I for Saturday. We did not think it would be on. No sooner did we do it than it turned up on Theater Mania Gold.
It is worth it just for the introductory show. We saw it on a Saturday mid orchestra.
Well to update....I joined Gold yesterday, found an offer for $59 to join no free tickets..they are offering Rock of Ages now for the $99 rate.
The jury is still out on Gold. AE is not offering much, I think it's the way they provide pick up (at the box office). Imagine I go and pick up comp tix and the person behind me paid $250 for a pair the same performance.
Someone told me Gold offered Lombardi recently...true or not? Updated On: 10/25/10 at 11:58 AM
True, Gold has had Lombardi on more than once. Also: Wings, Spirit Control, Language Archive, In Transit. They had very little in the summer, but have really picked up in the last month or so...
But how do they expect to get new members if you do not tell folks what they offer. And is this message board really PUBLIC, you do have to JOIN to get access.
Why not sign up for broadwaybox.com - it's free...
You can get the discounts free on their site..and sign up for free to get their codes by e-mail. And the discounts are really good, I use them all the time.
