“Flashdance” is a mess, a fairy tale that can't even hold onto a single point of view...a weirdly fascinating amalgam of “Billy Elliott” and the kinds of shows that they say were staged in Havana before the revolution. The show's creators should go on their knees to beg Charles Busch for help. Busch is the king (or queen?) of camp, the drag genius behind shows like “Die! Mommy! Die!” and “The Divine Sister.” The extravagantly vulgar “Flashdance” is halfway there already; why not complete the trip?
I just can't fathom who the audience for this is. WHO has been clamoring for a pseudo-jukebox Flashdance musical? I know the UK tends to go wild over this stuff, but really, who thinks this is going to succeed here?
They should have left the UK version alone, it got great reviews on tour and did great business, its London reviews were normally 3 stars which is about what anyone can expect from a musical adaptation of Flashdance. The show did not close a few weeks early in London because it was bad or got bad press, it closed because it could not find an audience with the like of Legally Blonde etc doing huge business. I honestly thought the UK version with its darker tone worked, yes a couple of songs needed removing but i enjoyed it. This version seems like its just straight up camp
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
