Mariah Carey's been dreaming of a Broadway Christmas since late 2004, when she originally announced plans for a holiday musical, and now she's finally making progress with her plan. "I don't want to mention anything definitive until things are signed," she told MTV Radio, "but there's a very big company that just signed on to develop the project with me." Carey said the musical — which she'll create, produce and star in — will incorporate music from her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, as well as new material. "It's probably going to be a movie first," she said. "I don't want to say a television movie, because it's not like a cheesy network movie, but then it's going to be made for the Broadway production. So the [TV movie] will set the stage for the stage."

The most awkward life performer I have ever seen! Like a big Lama stuck in a 2x2 room!

She may not be able to captivate the audience through her movement, but there are few people that can match her vocally (and she's beautiful too).

I'll buy out the whole house on my own if I could raise the money...I love Mariah Carey, and vocally she is one of the most amazing women in history. I think this post literally just made my day.

Cheers,

Anyone know her range for sure? I read five, six and seven octaves...

But,..how are her large cellulite-filled thighs and implants going to be able to fit on stage?

I'm so over her and her 'ghetto' she believes she's from. Last I looked, she was a white girl from Long Island. Posing as a black girl from the projects. And all these 'so-called' #1 singles were not rightfully earned. She was married to the head of SONY records, for christssake..payola to radio stations...all the way.

she must be stopped. please,...not Broadway.

I believe that her range is five octaves...that's the number that I've heard most often. As far as the "ghetto" thing goes...yes she was not brought up in true poverty, but she is bi-racial...her father was originally from Argentina and was very dark skinned. Broadway may be a little self-indulgent on her part but I'd be on the first plane to NYC if it ever happened.

Cheers,

Christopher

Her top notes is a soprano High F (which is impressive) but it bottoms out two octaves later.

A lot of her stuff today is "finessed" or,like the always trotted out, "Hero", lowered by a whole tone.

She is quite simply the most self-conscious performer I have ever seen live.

So the idea of her speaking and SINGING live, 8 times a weeek, is a little hard to believe.

Also the thought of her turning down millions to tour to do a Broadway show

well..

I'll agree she has one of the best singing voice of anyone today.

Acting is a totally other story.

And I was a huge fan of hers in the mid 90s--I owned "Music Box" and still love listening to it, and "DayDream." I loved all her music from that era, and those #1's were great IMO. But I stopped liking her so much when her image changed. I still like some songs she's made since then--Honey, Butterfly, My All, and Heartbreaker--but certainly not in the way I love Hero, Dreamlover, Fantasy, and One Sweet Day.

Impressive as her range may be, she still doesn't know ANYTHING about nuance or subtlety, and she (like many other "divas" and too many of the American Idol wannabees) seems to turn every song into a vocal exercise filled with overdone melisma that's all over the map-- end result: noise.

And that piercing dog-whistle thing she does in most of her songs makes my ears bleed. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

(PS- Sandra Bernhard does a fantastic impression of Mariah and her unreal image and attitude...)

I love Mariah. I think she's purely and utterly fantastic in every single way and if you think she lacks subtlety than you need to listen to songs other than "Heartbreaker" or power ballads like "One Sweet Day". Try songs like "Butterfly" or even songs off of Emancipation of Mimi.

Now to stay on topic, I think the movie idea whether TV or theatrical is terrible and she should just stick to a limited engagement at a broadway theater during christmas time. I'm thinking kinda like Judy's performances at the Palace where its for a period of time and its just her singing Christmas music.

CatStageStud -- here's the correct heritage lineage of Mariah Carey:

Her parents are Patricia Hickey (Irish-American) and Alfred Roy Carey (African-American/Venezuelan).

Her father is NOT from Argentina! We fellow Argentines fell off our high horses when we read your post.

I would more likely speak of her "amazing five octave range" in past tense. she lost her chops a long time ago and if you really believe she's hitting those notes live now-a-days, I've got a shiny bridge to sell you too. Seriously, she was once an absolute force to be reckoned with vocally but has the charisma of wallpaper. And where would most of the Broadway riffers (particularly Shoshana Bean and Espinosa) be without Carey to emulate, almost note for note?

Isn't it a little early for a "Brooklyn" revival?

I'm just saying.

Maybe she wants to do the revival of "Slut, The Musical" and take it to Broadway and make the show about a woman who is a slut instead of a guy. It would be very empowering for women.

Wow, I never thought there would be this much discussion about this topic.

I personally enjoy Mariah Carey. I like her music and her voice and I like her as a person. I think she's one of the nicest celebrities out there today.

Hello. Mariah Carey is a FAB singer. No doubt about that. However, she has yet to prove herself in the acting department. Remember "Glitter"? Unless she's been to some acting school that we don't know of, she ought to stay away from Broadway. Her attempts to take on the Great White Way reminds me of dramatic actress with dubious vocal skills. (i.e. G.C.) Mariah has her vocal powers, but dubious dramatic skills. Still, that never stopped anyone before, either on film or stage. from Roman in Austin, Texas...the official Patti LuPone FANatic

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Sorry Brody, I thought he was from Argentina, but that was me recalling info. from a long time ago. I knew he was African-American and had heritage from South America. Either way I kinda dig the idea that GYPSY gave; book a limited engagement...I'll stay w/ my aunt and uncle for a month and listen to her sing Christmas music every night. :-P In response to your statement Patti FAN, her work opposite Mira Sorvino in "Wisegirls" was well-received critically at either Sundance or Cannes a few years back...it was after "Glitter" and after the breakdown situation. It wasn't a bad film, not anything amazing either, but she improved as an actress from "Glitter" to "Wisegirls" I thought.

Cheers,
Christopher

I can't believe all these posts commenting on what a great "singer" she is. Her voice is gone. She's horrible. I don't know what she's done to it, but I hope to God I never damage my voice the way she has. Her voice sounds OK-not great-on her current recordings, but LIVE is another story. She couldn't possibly do 8 shows a week on Broadway. Oh, wait. Yes, she could. All she has to do is lip-sync, like she's done several times in the past few years. She'll sing the low parts of the song live, changing it up a bit to give the illusion she's singing the whole song live, but then she'll lip-sync the high parts.
I used to be a HUGE fan, but now I'm sort of disgusted at her apparent arrogance and refusal to get some decent voice lessons. Surely, she could be helped.

im praying for mariah everyday. (not as much as i'm praying for whitney)the girl's voice was like "OMG!" All those big noisefest stadium concerts mess your voice up. stop being greedy. do small venues.
and not to get off topic too much, but do most people think "ghetto" means poor? i mean im from the ghetto and i'm not poor.
