Leading Men

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Made me wonder what's next for Esparza. Anyone know?

Once again Boyd Gaines is overlooked. I guess four Tony Awards mean nothing nowadays.

How can someone be overlooked in an article about one person's selection of his favorite leading men?

I always get Boyd Gaines mixed up with Davis Gaines.

I've had the chance to see both in performance: Boyd Gaines (in Gypsy) and Davis Gaines (as Anthony in the San Francisco Symphony production of "Sweeney Todd" in SF in 2001. His vocals are beyond belief!

What about Hugh Jackman? If ever there was a musical star, he's it. Totally agree re: Boyd Gaines.

Jackman has been in one actual musical on Broadway.

Between SVU and Hannibal and the demanding schedule that comes with being a regular on a 25+ episode season, he can't really honor any theater commitments. So, more of that for now.

The article also states (incorrectly) that Esparza has not created a role on Broadway. It may not have lasted very long, but he did create Jonas Nightingale in LEAP.

I thought that at first, too, but then it says "of note." Not an oversight, editorialized.

Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway may not have been a book show, but it certainly was musical. They should have reinstituted the Best Theatrical Event Tony category.

I don't think that list has changed in a few years.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
