Honestly, I don't see NPH as "Billy Flynn". Neil has a nice but fairly modest voice. I saw him perform in the 2001 concert version of "Sweeny Todd" in San Francisco. I think a stronger voice is required for "Billy."
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I see your point Jim. But he'll be busy with "Hedwig" for a while. My ideal would be John Stamos for "Billy Flynn." I did ask him that question in one of those Broadway.com Q & A's. He basically replied sarcastically that he'd be in Chicago only if Chita Rivera was there as well. He mentioned that he's been offered the role, but it hasn't happened (possibly he wasn't offered enough $$?). Seth MacFarlane would be an inspired choice.

NPH is at a point where Chicago needs him more than he needs Chicago. He's frankly too big for Chicago; he's not a star that needs to prove his theatrical chops. He's done that already. And I'm sure producers have been itching for him to finish HIMYM for him to do a real Broadway run again. Hedwig getting him was a real coup.
(If we're being honest, I think NPH doing Hedwig is a mistake, but that's just me.)

If NPH was cast as Billy Flynn, he'd definitely bring a different spin to the role than what we'd normally see. I think he would be an interesting choice for Billy.
