Okay. I hope I'm wrong. And if I am, I will absolutely eat my words. I truly do want new musicals to succeed...But can this show possibly be anything other then a classic flop?
From Broadway.com:
"Beginning performances September 27 at the Music Box and opening there on October 20 is IN MY LIFE, featuring book, music, lyrics, and direction by Joe Brooks, who is best known for the Academy Award-winning title song of the film You Light Up My Life, a picture Brooks also wrote and directed.
The ad copy describes In My Life as "the slightly dysfunctional story of a musician with Tourettes, a girl with OCD, and the one affliction they share---true love."
cause you.... light up my life... you give me hope to carry on... you light up my days and fill my nights with song. It can't be wrong when it feels so right Cause you.... you light up my life.

This has to be a joke, right? Please God tell me it's a joke!
If it's for real, PLEASE let there be a big production number sung by the Tourettes sufferer where their explosive profanity becomes part of the number!
The Mambo Kings: conceived, book co-authored, lyrics and direction by a newcomer to the stage and they were all the same person. This musical collapses on the road without getting closer to town than SF.
In My Life (a ripped-off title as ever was, that makes ticket buyers think its by Lennon-McCartney): book, score, direction (and probably financed at least in part) all by the same person who has never done any of these chores for a stage show before now. Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.
If you are curious, really really curious, I'd go the first week because the second week might be pre-empted shall we say.

Thanks! I just spit water outta my mouth! Hey, Debby will be done with CAMELOT by then. To quote BobbyBubby, This makes me vomit a little in my mouth.
"For me, THEATRE is an anticipation, an artistic rush, an emotional banquet, a jubilant appreciation, and an exit hopeful of clearer thought and better worlds."

Did anyone else see the full-page ad that Joe Brook's son took out in the NY Times a few months ago? It was weird.
I don't know. Maybe it was supposed to get people thinking fondly of him or something...you know so that they would want to buy tickets when this show is produced. Do I sound slightly cynical? I shouldn't; I'm just really SCARED!

Perhaps, but at least URINETOWN was supposed to be funny. What are these people thinking? Start with the question, "Is this a good idea for a musical?" If yes, (and that is really stretching it) question #2, "How do we market this thing." Once you have that figured out ask yourself this very important question, "Who in their right minds would want to see this?"
Now MENOPAUSE:THE MUSICAL sounds just dreadful and you couldn't pay me to sit through it, but at least half of their audience can relate to the subject matter. This one will be interesting to watch.
I hate to say it, but this might have some potential. It's either going to be REALLY REALLY good, or painfully, wretchedly, horribly bad. I don't like to make up my mind about a show before it comes out, but this might have "Lord of the Rings: The Musical" written all over it...
I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.
"Jessica Boevers, Christopher Hanke, Roberta Gumbel and Chiara Navarra will be among cast members of the new Broadway musical, In My Life, beginning Sept. 27."
As much as I always try to keep an open mind about any new show coming to Broadway or anywhere else, having someone who is a total neophyte to Broadway directing and being solely responsible for the book, music and lyrics is 99.9999% a recipe for a complete and utter disaster.
Why does "Not Since Carrie" come to mind?
