STC ED presents The Residents in ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST, By Dario Fo. Translated by Alan Cumming and Tim Supple

12 September to 3 October 2009. Opens Monday 14 September at 7.00pm.
Wharf 2, Sydney Theatre Company, Pier 4 Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay

Stefo Nantsou directs Dario Fo's political satire, Accidental Death of an Anarchist, with a cast comprised of most of Sydney Theatre Company's new permanent acting ensemble, The Residents. The production, drawing on traditions of farce and commedia dell'Arte, is at Wharf 2 from 12 September as part of the Company's extensive 2009 Education program (STC Ed). Evening performances are open to the general public.

Dario Fo's famous satire lampoons officialdom and bureaucracy, as dim-witted inspectors duel with The (master of disguise) Maniac who continually outsmarts them in their attempts to investigate a suspicious death. Though fictional, the play takes as starting point events involving the death of a real person, Giuseppe Pinelli, who died after plunging to his death from the fourth floor window of a Milan police station in 1969.

Stefo Nantsou is a resident director at Sydney Theatre Company and has a long association with STC Ed. He founded Zeal Theatre, the acclaimed touring company renowned for original theatrical productions for schools, universities, national and international festivals. The company has created 40 productions; more than half specifically created for teenage audiences, including the STC-commissioned Burnt, Taboo, Australia vs South Africa and Gronks.

The Residents moved in to The Wharf in July 2009. They will occasionally be seen in their own Main Stage shows (including The Mysteries at Wharf 2 from 22 Nov to 19 Dec) but just as importantly they work in the Company's Next Stage, Back Stage and Education streams, moving regularly between these different areas. While six of The Residents are rehearsing Accidental Death of An Anarchist, the others continue with a busy schedule of creative developments and workshops with a range of playwrights.

STC Ed delivers a specially designed program for up to 30,000 young people each year, including four major productions, a range of workshops, professional development opportunities for teachers and a range of other activities.
