UM School of Theatre & Dance to Showcase DANCE NEW WORKS This May

The University of Montana School of Theatre & Dance's Dance Program presents its most experimental new choreography in the culminating concert of the year, Dance New Works.

Held in the Dance Program's intimate home venue, the Open Space, Dance New Works features three separate programs highlighting raw new choreographers, collaborative projects between choreographers and lighting designers, and capstone work of BFA graduating seniors.

The imaginative new format of Dance New Works offers the audience an immersive and diverse viewing experience. Program II will premiere experimental and fully realized live performances conceptualized and produced by four creative teams of choreography and lighting design students. Their work exemplifies the possibilities present when collaborative artists commence the creative process. Program I highlights the Dance Program's exceptional talent of up-and-coming choreographers, while Program III is dedicated to celebrating the final production of choreography and performance by graduating seniors.

Program I highlights choreography by first-year dance majors, Noelle Huser and Tiki Preston. Each equipped with burgeoning talent, these choreographers showcase nuance and maturity in their choreographic contributions. A sneak preview of guest artist Brian Gerke's latest works will also be featured in Program I. Known for his virtuosic movement creation and development of visceral imagery, Gerke will complete this newest work for UM dance students for Fall 2017.

Program II unveils the creative collaboration of artists studying choreography and light design. Beginning the creative process together, the final works produced in this concert demonstrate the connectivity between movement and light and how this relationship can be presented to take audiences on original and unexpected journeys.

Program III features the work of BA and BFA candidates in dance: Hannah Dahl, Wyatt Guerrero, Caroline Kinsley, Kathryn Louise, Carissa Lund, and Gina Sgrenci. This collection of work is as diverse as the artists, reflecting their curiosity about the multiple ways one can approach dance making and performance. The audience will see dance as a communicative art, a partner of music, a mode of healing, and a subject for the camera. Real, immediate, and speaking from the minds and emotions of the choreographer and performers, these dances will engage the audience in powerful ways.

Dance has the power to inform, inspire, and impact the viewer. The student choreographers and dancers at the University of Montana are eager to share art that has the possibility of evoking emotion and provoking reflection.
