The Muny announced today that one of Broadway's premier sound designers, Tony Meola, will serve as Sound Designer for The Muny's 2015 summer season. With credits on more than twenty-six Broadway shows, as well as countless national tours and international productions, Tony is excited to make his Muny debut.

"They say you haven't made it until you play the Palace," said Mr. Meola. "But I would add The Muny to that list. Certainly, the creative, collaborative energy emanating from Mike Isaacson and his entire team make St. Louis the go-to summer spot for many artists I respect and admire, and I look forward to working with them all this season."

"Having Tony on our artistic team is truly a dream come true," said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. "He is literally known throughout the world for his superb artistry. Having Tony as The Muny's sound designer, and seeing him share his talent, experience and vision with all our creative teams will be so exciting and inspiring."

Starting with Lincoln Center Theater's acclaimed revival of Anything Goes, directed by Jerry Zaks, Tony's list of Broadway smashes (and the occasional flop) is dazzling: Guys and Dolls; She Loves Me; Five Guys Named Moe; Smokey Joe's Café; Shogun, the Musical; A Grand Night for Singing; The Red Shoes; The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public; A Christmas Carol (at Madison Square Garden); Chronicle of a Death Foretold; Company; Moon Over Buffalo; The King and I; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; Juan Darien; The Last Night of Ballyhoo; Steel Pier; The Lion King (for which he won the 1998 Drama Desk Award); The Sound of Music (for which he was nominated for a 1998 American Theatre Wing Design Award); High Society; Footloose; The Wild Party; Copenhagen; Kiss Me, Kate; Sweet Smell of Success; Man of La Mancha; Laugh Whore; The Ritz; Pal Joey; Lysystrata Jones; The Mystery of Edwin Drood (for which he received another Drama Desk Award) and Wicked.

Vincent Canby, in his New York Times review of The Lion King said this: "Tony Meola, the sound designer... is responsible for the fact that The Lion King is one of the very few current Broadway musicals that you can hear clearly and, you might even say, distortion-free." This is the only positive review for a sound designer of a musical ever given by a NY Times critic, so far.

In addition, Tony's work has been heard extensively overseas, including Wicked; Kiss Me, Kate; The Lion King; Smokey Joe's Café and Anything Goes in London, LES MISERABLES in Singapore, Disney's Der Glöckner Von Notre Dames (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) in Berlin, and Mozart! in both Vienna and Hamburg.

Though Tony's most visible achievements have come from the large musicals he's designed, some of his most cherished experiences have come from his ongoing commitment to smaller shows, and shows still in development. Highlights are Durang, Durang at Manhattan Theatre Club; Violet at Playwrights Horizons; Elliot Ness in Cleveland at the Denver Center Theatre Company; A New Brain at Lincoln Center Theater; Love, Janis at the Village Gate Theatre; and Give It Up at the Dallas Theatre Center. And throughout his career, Tony has supported The Goodspeed Opera House by being their sound consultant and designing several productions.
