The Milk Carton Kids to Play the Lincoln Theatre, 10/29

Formed in 2011, indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids are singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. While their most obvious frame of musical reference is the classic folk sound of twin acoustic guitars and close harmonies, the duo both expand and contradict that rich legacy. The music strikes listeners immediately with its sweet, bluegrass-inflected simplicity, but underneath snake Pattengale's sinuous, modal guitar lines, sounding for all the world like a jazzified Bert Jansch dropped in to jam with the Everly Brothers. Their harmonies too, while recalling classic brother duos from the Louvins to the Everlys, achieve a richness that blends into a vivid singularity.

NPR has described their approach to music as "gorgeous contemporary folk" and "Gillian Welch & David Rawlings-meets-Simon & Garfunkel with a splash of The Everly Brothers." The band has recorded and released three albums, Retrospect, Prologue, and The Ash & Clay (2013). The band is known for releasing their albums free of charge, and vintage guitars-Ryan on a 1951 Gibson J45 and Pattengale on a 1954 Martin 0-15.
