Zap2it.com is reporting that the Shannen Doherty's character on Beverly Hills 90120, Brenda Walsh, will be directing the musical Spring Awakening as the part of the story of one of the upcoming episodes.
When the series ended in 2000 Brenda Walsh, as many recall, left her prestigious zip code in order to pursue a career in acting in London. Since then, the episode will explain, she has become quite the famous actress and director who splits her time between New York and London. In the episode marking her return, she comes back to West Beverly Hills High School to guest direct the musical.
"We're doing 'Spring Awakening," producer Jeff Judah said. "It's a great play, a great musical. We thought it would be a really cool thing to do a contemporary musical instead of doing 'Annie Get Your Gun' or something that a lot of high schools do. So if we could do a contemporary musical and put that in the show, it's sort of also talking about how the show has changed in the last 20 years."
"Spring Awakening is a Tony Award-winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The musical is based on the controversial 1891 German Spring Awakening of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality," describes press notes.
The series premiere of the new "90210" will air on September 2nd, 2008 on CW.
