STEALING SAM Set for United Solo Festival
Sam and Jimmy have been friends for more than twenty-five years, and they are supposed to be facing "gay middle age" together. When Sam dies, it's up to Jimmy to plan their final picnic. Jimmy steals Sam's cremated remains from the funeral home and tries to give his friend the send off he deserves.
Stealing Sam reveals a middle-aged man adrift in an unfriendly dating scene, as he tries to find love in the age of Facebook and wireless technology. The play examines dating in the post HIV/AIDS world, and the stigma that being HIV positive still carries. It addresses life with HIV and the ways it affects the life of it's victims, even when they're living healthily with it. And it's very, very funny.
A critical and audience hit in Canada, Stealing Sam played to sold out houses, and received Best of Fringe and Patron's Pick at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2013, and was awarded Outstanding New Play, Production, Actor and Director from NOW Magazine.
"Steven Gallagher's beautifully performed solo monologue...effortlessly weaves vivid episodes from Jimmy's past with his anxious present...leading up to an emotionally wrenching conclusion that's surprising, yet fully earned." NOW Magazine, NNNNN.
Stealing Sam is the third play from award winning playwright and actor, Steven Gallagher. As an actor, Steven has been seen across Canada, recently as Albin in La Cage aux Folles at Neptune Theatre (Merritt Award nominee)
Directed by Darcy Evans: Little Women (Associate Director - Broadway, US National Tour), I Love You Because (2 Dora Nominations, 14 Broadway World Nominations), Stratford Festival, (8 seasons, inaugural Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction)
