SOMETHING ROTTEN! to Launch National Tour in Boston This Season; 2016-17 Lineup Announced!

Just announced, the upcoming National Tour of SOMETHING ROTTEN will officially launch as part of Broadway In Boston's 2016-17 season!

Now in its 32nd year, Broadway In Boston unveiled its 2016-2017 Lexus Broadway Season at its annual Spring Announcement event. Eight theatrical productions, including one critically acclaimed play, with a combined total of 21 Tony Awards collectively, will take center stage at the Boston Opera House beginning next Fall.

"From new musical blockbusters, to classic musicals to award winning plays, this Season has it all - even a little magic," said Tivon Marcus, Vice President of Broadway In Boston. "There is not a more exciting time than now to experience Broadway and we're thrilled that some of the biggest shows are coming to Boston."

Boston will be the official launch city of the National Tour of Something Rotten!, the hilarious new Broadway smash hit. Set in 1595, this mash-up of 16th Century Shakespeare and 21st Century Broadway tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of Renaissance rock-star Will Shakespeare, and their quest to write the world's first musical. Adapted from the internationally best-selling novel by Mark Haddon and winner of five 2015 Tony Awards including Best New Play, the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME is the record breaking theatrical phenomenon that follows fifteen year old Christopher and the journey that will change his life. Boston is in for a magical experience with THE ILLUSIONISTS. Seen by millions all over the world and taking their cue from the great Illusionists of the past, this mind blowing and unprecedented spectacular showcases the thrilling and sophisticated talents of seven of the most incredible Illusionists on earth.

The Boston Opera House will also play host to FINDING NEVERLAND, which premiered at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA in 2014 before opening on Broadway. Directed by visionary Tony®-winner Diane Paulus and based on the critically-acclaimed Academy Award®-nominated film starring Johnny Depp, FINDING NEVERLAND tells the incredible story behind one of the world's most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Also slated for Boston is Lincoln Center Theater's glorious production of THE KING AND I, directed by Bartlett Sher and winner of four 2015 Tony® Awards including Best Revival of a Musical. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's finest works with a cast of over 50, two worlds collide in this classic musical set in 1860's Bangkok. Life is a CABARET! As part of their 50th Anniversary season, Roundabout Theatre Company's definitive, Tony® Award winning musical masterpiece about following your heart while the world loses its way returns featuring Broadway showstoppers from the team of John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago).

Two productions are "working their way back" to Boston due to "popular" demand. Kicking off the Broadway In Boston 16-17 Season next Fall and seen by over 200,000 theatregoers around New England is the Tony® Award winning Best Musical JERSEY BOYS, the story behind Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, "The Four Seasons." WICKED is Broadway's biggest blockbuster. Groups around the world leap to their feet in standing ovations night after night...and now audiences have another chance to experience the cultural phenomenon when it flies back to Washington Street.

More than 700 people from around the city gathered to celebrate today's announcement including Broadway In Boston's Season ticket holders, group leaders, arts and business leaders, city officials, partners from around the city, sponsors and the Boston media. Highlights from the day included live performances from the Broadway casts of Something Rotten!, and FINDING NEVERLAND.
