Rooftop Films Summer Series Announces Full Schedule

Rooftop Films announces its full schedule for the 2013 Summer Series, featuring more than 45 outdoor screening of new independent films, including 15 previously unannounced short film programs and dates for all 45 special events across New York City.

The 2013 Rooftop Films Summer Series begins on May 10th with a collection of extraordinary new short films from around the world, including Gold Party by Nellie Kluz, a recipient of a grant from the Rooftop Filmmakers Fund; Slomo by Josh Izenberg, winner of the jury award for best short documentary at the 2013 SXSW film festival; and Weighting, directed Brie Larson and Dustin Bowser. The Summer Series will conclude August 15-17 with three amazing screenings, including a special sneak preview of David Lowery's simmering drama,Ain't Them Bodies Saints, screened outdoors at the Queens County Farm Museum.

Screenings continue next weekend with a free screening of the documentary Brothers Hypnotic at MetroTech Commons on Friday, May 17th, featuring a live performance by the subjects of the film, the 9-man Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. On May 18th, Rooftop will present New York Mayhem, a collection of striking new short films by New York based filmmakers, on two separate roofs atop Industry City in Sunset Park Brooklyn. New York Mayhem will be the first of four screenings at Industry City, a new venue that offers breathtaking views of New York Harbor, the lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and South Brooklyn.

Rooftop has always featured tremendous short film programs, and this year they will feature more than 100 short fiction, documentary, and animated films, always in themed programs. On June 7th, world-renowned pianist Bruce Levingston will perform spectral works of music, including Philip Glass' "Dracula Suite," accompanied by footage from Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula, to presage a night of eerie and mysterious short films.

On Wednesday, June 12, Rooftop, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Forest City Ratner will present Interface Innovation, a collection of new short films featuring datamoshed moments and postmodem lifestyles, accompanied by new interactive works from the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center and the CITE Game Innovation Lab, both programs at NYU-Poly.

Other short film highlights include Love Hurts, a program of romantic shorts on May 24; Trapped (May 31), a collection of thrilling films about people caught in inescapable scenarios; New York Non-Fiction (June 14), Rooftop's annual celebration of New York personalities;Absurd Animation (June 15) and Animation Block Party (July 26) two stunning batches of the best animated films from across the globe;INDUSTRIANCE: Black Out (July 27), featuring Eva Weber's powerful portrait of Conakry, Guinea; and Rooftop Shots, Rooftop's closing night celebration of international shorts.

Also announced today are the dates for Rooftop Films' 30 feature film events, including The Kings Of Summer (May 25), The Dirties (recently acquired by Phase 4 Films, screening on June 1), Tiger Tail in Blue (June 22), Our Nixon (a free screening at Socrates Sculpture Park on July 3), Bending Steel (a free show on the beach at Coney Island on July 8), and our SXSW weekend lineup of 12 O'Clock Boys, Awful Nice, andElena (August 8, 9, and 10).
