Proxy Theatre's BETHLEHEM to Open 8/22

In the final play of Proxy's second season, Bethlehem, we travel to west Texas with Lee Rosenblum to eek out the real story behind Mateo Buenaventura-- the recently released murderer. This dark play from El Paso native and Trinity University alum Octavio Solis is sure to make your skin crawl, your jaw drop, and your heart beat wildly. Winner of the 2003 National Latino Playwriting Award, Bethlehem is about the nature of evil-- how it can infect those around it. Directed by Artistic Director Aaron Aguilar, this play "might be Proxy's strangest offering to date-using magic realism, Solis' poetic Spanglish writing, and lots of blood," according to Aguilar, Bethlehem is a play the likes of which San Antonio rarely sees.

Opening in the scorching heat of El Paso, journalist Lee Rosenblum arrives to get the "real" story about Mateo Buenaventura, a man convicted of murder recently released from the psych ward. Warned by many that no good will come of the visit, Lee delves into the history of Mateo, but loses himself to the dark past-but is it his or Mateo's past?

Opens August 22nd and closes September 7th; shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm.
