Drawing on the country's folk roots and pop power, the GRAMMY-winning Phoenix Chorale invites you to celebrate "American Folk," in concerts around the Valley, March 4th through 6th.

Experience America's musical evolution over the centuries, from timeless sea chanteys like "Shenandoah" and the Wild West hallmark "Home on the Range" to songs from today's classic singer-songwriters Pete Seeger, James Taylor and Dolly Parton.

Phoenix Chorale's "American Folk" takes audiences on an unforgettable musical journey through the ages. Among the concert's highlights is the presentation of composer Aaron Copland's 10-song cycle "American Folk." Hear distinctive choral arrangements of Copland's homage to the earliest days of American song, a masterpiece of unadorned choral excellence. Whether celebrating heavenly hopes with the revivalist spiritual "Zion's Walls," and the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts," or reveling in the bawdy brashness of "The Boatman's Dance," Copland's work traces the religious traditions, rhythms of work, and ballads of daily life which combined to create an unmistakably American sound.

"American Folk" also showcases the singers who carried these folk traditions forward into the present day, capturing the joyful harmonies of another era in their own music. From Pete Seeger's ballad for civil rights, "If I Had a Hammer," to Billy Joel's poetic "And So it Goes," and Dolly Parton's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning," these artists prove that the folk tradition at the heart of American music still beats proud and strong. Come join the Phoenix Chorale for "American Folk," and reminisce with the music and the memories.
