There has rarely been an Amanda Palmer album release that didn't have a strong visual art component. The photography book Who Killed Amanda Palmer, released in 2008 in conjunction with her album of the same name with text & short stories by husband Neil Gaiman, is now a collector's item. To accompany her latest Kickstarter release, Theatre is Evil, Amanda commissioned 30 visual artists (many of whom are also musicians) to create work (in all different mediums including painting, sculpture and photography) inspired by the lyrics of the album. This art was featured in a 6-city traveling "Pop-Up" art exhibit in the summer of 2012, which was attended by Kickstarter backers. It was used as the graphics for the album, the 7" singles, the touring merchandise, and more. Along with a lengthy introduction penned by Palmer about her history with all 30 artists, this artwork was published in 2012 in The Grand Theft Art Companion, a heavy coffee-table art book which also featured artist notes, bios and behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of the art.

Palmer paid the artists for the rights to re-print their artwork, but the artists still own the physical work itself. Now the majority of the artists, including David Mack, Michael Zulli, Cassandra Long, Nicole Duennebier, Molly Crabapple and Palmer herself have donated original artwork from The Grand Theft Art Companion to be sold at PS122's Spring 2013 Gala Auction, to benefit this legendary and greatly cherished New York City arts venue, where Palmer first performed over a decade ago with The Dresden Dolls. The artwork will be hung at the Gala, taking place at El Museo del Barrio, where Palmer will be honored alongside Councilwoman Rosie Mendez and chef Gabrielle Hamilton. Online bidding for the artwork closes at 12pmEST TOMORROW, June 8th.
