Caramoor, located in Katonah, NY, will celebrate the enduring legacy of the American Songbook with Bernstein on Broadway, a program that includes Bernstein's most beloved songs and dance music from West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, and Wonderful Town on July 1 at 8 p.m. in the Venetian Theater.
The program will feature
Judy Kaye with Lisa Vroman and James Martin and the Orchestra of St. Luke's led by
Michael Barrett.
Jamie Bernstein will narrate the event with personal stories and letters surrounding the opening of
West Side Story.It was recently announced that Kaye will play Mrs. Lovett in the current revival of
Sweeney Todd for eight performances
from June 20th through 25th while Patti LuPone is on vacation. The star, who is currently Tony-nominated for her recent work as a tone-deaf society matron in Souvenir, won a Tony Award for her performance in The Phantom of the Opera, and has also been nominated for her work in Mamma Mia!. She has appeared on Broadway in Ragtime, Oh, Brother!, The Moony Shapiro Songbook, On the Twentieth Century and Grease. The Pajama Game, Brigadoon (both at New York City Opera) and Annie Get Your Gun (Paper Mill Playhouse) are among her many regional credits, and she is also an acclaimed concert and recording artist.
Vroman starred for two years as Christine in
The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. She recently returned to the West Coast for engagements in San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles, already having garnered theater critics' awards for Phantom's record- setting run in San Francisco. She also recently starred on PBS as Johanna in the Emmy Award-winning
Sweeney Todd in Concert. Vroman has had numerous guest soloist appearances with orchestras across North America. On "Broadway Classic," Vroman's first solo CD, she teams up with 47 of SanFrancisco's most talented symphony players and welcomes Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe in a guest performance.
Martin received his Bachelor of Music from Illinois Wesleyan University and his Master's degree from The Juilliard School as a student of Cynthia Hoffmann. While at Juilliard he was also a member of The Juilliard Opera Center and received numerous awards. He has performed opera and concert throughout the United States and parts of Europe. Recently he made his Den Norske Opera debut as
Don Giovanni in Oslo, and with L'opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg, as Junius in Britten's
The Rape of Lucretia and Matt of the Mint in
The Beggar's Opera.
The daughter of Leonard Bernstein,
Jamie Bernstein is a narrator, writer and broadcaster "who has transformed a lifetime of loving music into a career of sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Jamie grew up in an atmosphere bursting with music, theatre and literature. Her father, composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein, together with her mother, the pianist and actress Felicia Montealegre, and their legions of friends in the arts, created a spontaneous, ebullient household that turned Jamie into a dyed-in-the-wool cultural enthusiast. Replicating her father's lifelong compulsion to share and teach, Jamie has devised several ways of communicating her own excitement about classical music, including 'The Bernstein Beat,' a concert for young people about her father, modeled after his own groundbreaking Young People's Concerts. She is noted for her work as a concert narrator and broadcaster.
In addition to his longtime work as a conductor for the New York
Philharmonic and composer of symphonic music, Bernstein wrote the music
for
On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide and
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,
in addition to his masterpiece
West Side Story, with lyrics by
Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. He also wrote the operas
Trouble in
Tahiti and
A Quiet Place.
