Egypt is an ancient land of marvels, monuments, and mystery. Egypt has always captured our imaginations and our hearts and no more so than in the enchanting love story, Aida.

This powerful story speaks of duty, love, betrayal, and the unyielding bond that can connect two people... even through all of time. Winner of four Tony Awards Aida has a lush and commanding score by Sir Elton John and memorable lyrics by the incomparable Tim Rice.

Aida comes to the beautiful outdoor Woodminster Theater in Oakland for a limited engagement. Playing September 4th through the 13th, this triumphant love story about winning against all odds is one you cannot miss.

About the story: Aida chronicles the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess taken into slavery; Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, captain of the Egyptian Army. After being taken from her homeland and given to Princess Amneris, Aida begins to have feelings for Radames who is betrothed to the princess - and he starts to have feelings for her. Their forbidden love pits Aida's love for Radames against her duty and love for her own people. In the end they both must choose the path to take that may lead to love or death... or both.

Hodges & Hodges are really looking forward to this production. If you want to end your summer on a high note, come see Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida. And now, here are some things to do around the bay to get you in the mood before you see the show!

Walk Like an Egyptian over the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose. It was architecturally inspired by the Temple of Amon at Karnak and houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in western North America. They even have four mummies on exhibit to pique the interest of anyone interested in Egyptian history.

Go in-depth at MoAD. AIDA hits on many points, but one of the main issues in the story is slavery. MoAD (Museum of the African Diaspora) offers programs that showcase the art, history, and cultural richness of the African diaspora. Join MoAD to explore and celebrate beliefs, practices, traditions, and customs connected to these movements.

Sami African Imports had been bringing some of the best products from Africa for over 20 years. They have exciting and exotic products and specialize in fine soaps, African art, clothing and jewelry. Located at 2874 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, Sami African imports will entice your senses.

Wilsdom African Designs in Oakland offers a wide variety of African clothing including dashikis, African kufi, kaftans and Kente fabrics. They also offer pure black soap, African shea butter and exotic body oils. Indulge your senses and find an African inspired outfit to wear to the theater.

Bissap Baobab offers Senegalese food delivered by a warm staff. Bringing the tastes and smells of Africa to the Bay with a small dance floor and ethnic sounds, you're sure to fill your bellies and break a sweat. But don't worry you can always quench your thirst with a potent, exotic cocktail. The Hibiscus margarita is a must try.

The Show

What to watch for from Nick: It's going to be hard for me to review Aida with true objectivity as this was the first show I was ever in. Look for yourself to be moved by the beauty and romance of the music and to be transported by the sets by Robert "Bo" Golden.

What to look for from Linda: This show is in my top three favorites of all time, so unlike Nick, I'm looking for superior performances, stage crew sophistication and excellent sound (Woodminster has a new sound system). If you're going to do Elton John's music and Tim Rice's lyrics, then you better be prepared to do them right. Watch for the song "The Gods Love Nubia" to wow you and bring you back to see this show a second time. And watch for the chemistry between Radames and Aida. It has got to be electric for the show to be a hit.

Be prepared for chilly weather: It's a beautiful outdoor amphitheater so it gets a little chilly after sundown. Dress in layers and bring a few throws if you have them.

We invite you to join us on this enchanting and beautiful excursion into the powerful world that is AIDA.
