We learn about war in images and process our opinions in words. On September 12th, 2017, launching the sixteenth season of Pen Parentis Literary Salons in Lower Manhattan, novelists JESSICA SHATTUCK, XAVIER TREVINO and WHITNEY TERRELL, share the spotlight to discuss their extensive experiences writing about war.

Refugee to soldier, using embedded journalistic techniques, personal experience, and research, these three authors know the topic of War inside and out. Join us to hear how these writers, who are all also parents, balance an intense creative writing career with an active home life without losing touch with the outside world.

Jessica Shattuck is the author of #1 indie pick "The Women in the Castle" as well as "The Hazards of Good Breeding (a New York Times Notable Book and a Winship/PEN Award finalist). Emerging writer Xavier Trevino is a veteran who writes about his experiences in the civilian world. Whitney Terrell's novel "The Good Lieutenant" was chosen as best book of 2016 by The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Refinery 29.

"This topic is so timely," says Pen Parentis founder Milda De Voe, a lower Manhattan resident, "In order to make this appearance, Terrell, who was an embedded reporter in Iraq and who covered that war for NPR, is returning to our stage all the way from Missouri. It's important for people to realize that politics and art often overlap-that sometimes it is dangerous to be an artist."

This exciting event launches the Fall 2017 season of the renown Downtown series that shatters parental stereotypes as it celebrates the diverse creative work of writers that are also parents. Held in the glamorous Andaz Wall Street, participants are encouraged to mix and mingle with the authors as well as book-loving neighbors and industry notables.

The night begins at 7pm with networking over wine, compliments of the hotel. Readings and signings will be followed by Q&A moderated by Pen Parentis founder M. M. De Voe and Salons curator Christina Chiu. The winner of the 2017-2018 Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship for New Parents, Megan Pillow Davis, is flying in from Louisville, Kentucky to receive her prize and read her winning story. All 21+ are welcome.

The event takes place on Tuesday, September 12th at the elegant Hotel Andaz at 75 Wall Street. Admission is free, but RSVP is strongly suggested. Books will be vended for signings.
