Gare St Lazare awarded Artistic Residency at The Everyman Theatre for Third Year Running

The Everyman Theatre, in partnership with Cork City Council and the Arts Council, is delighted to announce that Gare St Lazare Ireland will continue as Artists in Residence for 2017/2018. This is the company's third year in residency.

Gare St Lazare Ireland is an Irish theatre company with an international reputation for excellence. The company is dedicated to connecting their international reach back to their home city of Cork. Over the past two years, the residency base in the Everyman has offered the company's joint artistic directors, Judy Hegarty-Lovett and Conor Lovett, the opportunity to consolidate their roots. As Judy says, "Cork has all our beginnings and is once more the cradle of our next steps."

In addition to developing a new Beckett prose work for the stage, How It Is, Part One, as part of the residency they have taken part in public conversations, have opened their process up to local audiences and artists, and have provided valuable mentoring, knowledge sharing and master classes to young theatre makers, students and audiences. GSLI Artistic Director, Judy Hegarty-Lovett is looking forward to another year of residency where she can develop the company's current work and continue to engage in creative and meaningful way with local artists and theatre makers: "This third year offers a total and sustained engagement with our home city and allows for growth and fruition to happen with shared advantage to both company and collaborators."

Everyman Artistic Director, Julie Kelleher, said "We are thrilled to be embarking on a third year of this very special partnership with Gare St Lazare. We are hugely grateful to our funding partners, the Arts Council and Cork City Council, for enabling us to bring this residency to the next level. The residency has a broad range of important and valuable elements, and we're particularly pleased that the investment made in this singular company, both in terms of time and funding, will culminate in 2018 with a world premiere of their work How It Is, presented on, and made for, the Everyman stage and auditorium."

Created with composer/sound designer Mel Mercier, and featuring Stephen Dillane, alongside Conor Lovett on stage,How It Is will be Gare st. Lazare Ireland's 11th Beckett prose work for the stage. The novel is considered one of Beckett's greatest literary achievements and yet remains virtually unknown to its public. Gare St Lazare Ireland will offer a world premiere of this work to Cork at the Everyman in 2018 and, made in Cork, it will travel the world bearing that hallmark

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Since creating Gare St Lazare in 1998, the collaborative team of director Judy Hegarty-Lovett and actor Conor Lovett, have performed Beckett's work in Ireland and across the globe, appearing at international festivals such as UCLA LiveArts, Melbourne Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Festival and many others. Their US & European tours and coproduction partnerships include ArtsEmerson Boston, Signature Theater, New York (Title and Deed by Will Eno 2012), Dublin Theatre Festival (Waiting For Godot 2013), Kilkenny Arts Festival, as well as site-specific/site-sensitive ventures in museums, galleries and warehouses.

In November of this year, the company will make their second visit, in three years, to the Lincoln Center's White Light Festival, with their acclaimed production of The Beckett Trilogy. They were last at the White Light Festival with The End by Samuel Beckett & Here All Night in 2015.

In April 2018, Here All Night, the company's theatrical work for soprano, actor and chamber orchestra, will receive its Irish premiere at the Abbey Theatre before embarking on a nationwide tour. Set against the backdrop of a Brian O'Doherty sculpture, Here All Night is directed by Judy Hegarty-Lovett with composition by Paul Clark and performed by Conor Lovett, singer Melanie Pappenheim. the chamber orchestra includes Caoimhín Ó'Raghallaigh (hardanger), Chris Allan (cello), John Paul Gandy (piano) and a six strong choir from Boston.
