TVGuide.com gives an exclusive first look at Broadway vet Patti LuPone on the upcoming season of FX's AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN. The season premieres on October 9th.

Despite earlier reports, LuPone will not be portraying a witch on the popular horror series. "Patti will be playing someone who will go up against [Jessica Lange's supreme witch] Fiona and her daughter Cordelia [Sarah Paulson]," executive producer Tim Minear tells the site. The Tony winner's character, Joan Ramsey, "becomes a thorn in the women's sides when she and her sexy son move next door to Fiona's boarding school for young witches"

Series star Jessica Lange also shared her excitement over the addition of good friend LuPone to the cast. "I love her dearly," says the actress. "I'm in awe of Patti."

LuPone will join Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Taissa Farmiga, Evan Peters, and Gabourey Sidibe for the new season of the hit FX horror-themed anthology series.
