She is known for her performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch" in Stephen Sondheim's 1970 musical Company, her 2001 one-woman show Elaine Stritch at Liberty, and for her role as Jack Donaghy's mother Colleen on NBC's 30 Rock. She has been nominated for the Tony Award four times in various categories, and won for Elaine Stritch at Liberty. She received an Emmy Award in 2007 for her appearance on 30 Rock.

She was even more excited when she later nailed the audition, and became a member of The Manhattan Transfer.

Founded in Philadelphia in the early 1950s as "The Charlemages," the group changed its name to "Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes" in the 1960s. They recorded several hits on Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International label between 1972 and 1976.
