From August 19-23, 2013, the FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising's Library and Alumni Relations office are holding their fourth annual Innovative Materials Conference. In addition to presenting a variety of exciting materials and textiles, there will be guest speakers from the sustainable industry talking to FIDM students, faculty, and staff.

One of the conference's highlights will be an evening event with New York-based designer Michael Schmidt. In addition to creating costumes, jewelry, and accessories for Cher, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna, Michael recently designed a 3D printed dress with architect Francis Bitonti that was worn by style icon Dita von Teese and featured in press around the world. The black lacquer dress has been embellished with 12,000 Swarovski crystals.

The famed floor-length nylon gown, which was made using selective laser sintering (SLS) where material is built up in layers from plastic power that has been fused together, will be on display during the entire Innovative Materials Conference. The rigid plastic components create a netted structure to allow for movement. The design was based on a computer rendering of von Teese's body to ensure a perfect fit.

In addition to Michael, experts such as Julianne Pfister (beauty), Susanne Schicks (fashion), and Mellory McCurle (swimwear) will be on hand to share knowledge and inspire attendees. FIDM Textiles & Materials Manager Kristine Upesleja curates the Innovative Materials Conference each year.
