Do the words Back-To-School give you shivers of joy? On the night before NYC public schools resume, take a lovely evening walk down the length of Wall Street and land in the Andaz Wall Street at 75 Wall, where Pen Parentis Literary Salons will launch their fourteenth season on Tuesday, September 8th at 7pm with a great night of crime stories, literati sightings, and excellent conversation. The readings are open to the public, admission is free, and Andaz Wall Street provides the wine and light snacks. RSVP is recommended at penparentis.org/calendar.

This popular Salon series is sponsored by Pen Parentis, Ltd, a 501c3 literary nonprofit that provides resources to authors to help them stay on creative track after starting a family; the series features a diversity of high-quality creative work by authors who are also parents.

Three authors will read from new works on September 8th: Ed Lin, Jack Miller, and Tim O'Mara, who have all distinguished themselves in writing various types of crime fiction, from literary, to poetic, to award-winning serialized gumshoe novels set in Brooklyn. After the readings there will be lively discussion on the writing life and how these authors balance a creative career with their active families. You don't have to be a parent or a writer to enjoy this night of readings, mingling, and socializing over books. Books will be available for purchase if you want a signed copy by your favorite author, or bring your own.

The $1,000 Pen Parentis Writing Fellowship for New Parents will also be awarded at this season-launching event. This year's winner is Orli Van Maurik, a Brooklyn-based writer with two young daughters. Van Maurik, who recently relocated from Portland, Oregon, will read her winning story, "Waushakum Pond."

Moderated by Pen Parentis founder M. M. De Voe and Salons curator Christina Chiu, the Pen Parentis Literary Salons celebrate the creative work of writers that are also parents, and are a great place to meet industry notables. "You don't have to be a parent or even a writer to enjoy our events," DeVoe says. "They're just a fun, smart evening out." New this year, she adds, is a partnership with local indie bookseller Posman Books, who just opened their third location at Brookfield Place. "You'll see their bright green storefront on the second floor in that section of lovely new boutiques that used to be the food court," longtime downtown resident DeVoe says, "Pen Parentis loves indie booksellers and are delighted that such a friendly, and well-curated neighborhood shop will be vending books for signings at our salons. Stop by and visit their store!"

Pen Parentis Literary Salons are on the second Tuesday of each month September through May. Upcoming for Tuesday October 13th: Literary Horror with John Langan, Sarah Langan, and Veronica Shanoes. More: info@penparentis.org or just visit the website penparentis.org.
