Compelled by an inner conviction to protect and serve their country in a time of war and driven by deliberate decisions to join the fight against terrorism in ground-pounding combat as United States Army infantrymen, the soldiers of Third Platoon Charlie Company had no idea exactly what they were getting into and even less where this adventure would take them.

"What We Got Into" is author Casey Westenrieder's personal account of what happened to his platoon in Afghanistan and the events that followed. He started writing this book as therapy to get through the nightmares, the feelings of anxiety, paranoia, and the insomnia he had experienced as a result of combat duty. It also takes into account their platoon's rigid training and eventual deployment as well as the ungodly conditions they had to live with while on their tour of duty.

This moving story takes a rare look through the insider's eyes at the catastrophic collision of choice, circum-stance, and chance that rocked the lives of a whole platoon in the wake of a tragic and highly publicized suicide of one of their own and the unprecedented trials as military justice unfolds for the combat-seasoned and highly decorated platoon charged in connection with their comrade's death. These soldiers struggled to fight and heal from the scars of war. They found and rebuilt their lives beyond their calling as soldiers. However, what will it take for them to reclaim their lives which have been forever changed by a series of stories woven together?

"What We Got into" will let readers follow the dramatic encounters of daily combat where it is not about playing soldier but about being a true warrior and a survivor amidst the struggles and challenges of the modern-day battlefield. Westenrieder and the rest of the American soldiers lived out the choices they made to become infantry combat soldiers in the Taliban-infested grape fields of the Panjwei'i District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Throughout their journey, these soldiers found brotherhood in the face of isolation, courage in the face of fear, and strength in the face of pain and ultimate sacrifice. Furthermore, they will also learn to appreciate the fact that freedom is paid for at a high price by those willing to fight to protect others.
