Anjelica Huston Joins the Cast of NBC's 'Smash' Pilot

Academy Award-winning actress Anjelica Huston has been reported to join the cast of the NBC pilot "Smash". She'll be joining the already announced Broadway regulars Christian Borle and Megan Hilty, as well as Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Raza Jeffrey, and American Idol finalist Katharine McPhee.

Huston will play "Eileen, a smart, classy and ever-cynical theater producer", according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The plot will follow follow an out-of-town tryout of a Broadway musical, and centers around a songwriting team who write a musical about Marilyn Monroe based on an offhanded remark from an assistant. They post a showstopping number on YouTube. When it's a viral hit, a producer who's looking to recapture success long past decides to produce the musical. There are two choices to play Marilyn: Karen, a talented young newcomer, and Ivy, a theater veteran.

TV writer/playwright Theresa Rebeck wrote the script for Smash and is executive producing with Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of DreamWorks TV, Hairspray producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Grammy and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittmanwho will pen original songs for the show. Michael Mayer (American Idiot) is directing. This has been a passion project for new NBC chief Bob Greenblatt who first developed it at Showtime.
