Maroon 5 singer-songwriter, reality TV star and entrepreneur Adam Levine initially hid his songwriting efforts from friends because he was embarrassed by it, he tells Lee Cowan in an interview for CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH Charles Osgood to be broadcast June 2, 2013 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

Levine, a popular coach on the music competition series "The Voice," tells Cowan, "there was a time I was so embarrassed by it." So much so, he actually began writing songs in secret.

"I thought it was stupid," he tells Cowan. "I'm telling you, it was really because I wanted to be an athlete. All my friends were jocks, you know, so I was so un-cool I hid it from everybody."

Levine says his passion for music started early thanks to his parents. "They loved music," he tells Cowan. "So I was always surrounded by music and I remember we'd be in the car and my mother would kind of quiz me on, you know, who's singing this Beatles song and I'd usually get it wrong."

In a wide-ranging interview, Levine talks about living in California, the formation of Maroon 5, the impact of his television exposure and his various business ventures, which include a celebrity fragrance.

Levine generated some controversy recently when he was heard saying "I hate this country" after his contestants were voted off of "The Voice." He immediately went on Twitter to tell people it was a joke. In Cowan's interview, done before the dust-up, Levine admitted there were times his mouth has gotten him into trouble.

"I'm very much ok with who I am and comfortable in my skin enough to embrace that even though I don't say everything the right way and you know, tend to be a bit impulsive with some of the words that I select," he tells Cowan, laughing.
Cowan's interview with Levine will be broadcast June 2, 2013. CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
