From Dress Circle:

Voting continued until midnight on 31st January 2008We would like to thank the many thousands of Musical Theatre Fans who took part in our search by casting their vote for their favourite musical. We would also like to say congratulations to the lucky winner of a Superbreak to London who will be notified shortly. The voting has now closed and we are delighted to announce as the winner: WICKED
The Top Ten Musicals as voted for by you are
1st Place Wicked
2nd Place Les Miserables
3rd Place - The Phantom of the Opera
4th Place - Sweeney Todd
5th Place - Rent
6th Place - The Rocky Horror Show
7th Place - The Lord of the Rings
8th Place - Blood Brothers
9th Place - West Side Story
10th Place - Hairspray
Once again we would like to thank everyone that took part!"

Although Wicked is my favourite show and I have seen it *cough*20*cough* times, however I feel this only won due to the voting fangirls and Les Miserables should be the true winner!

Yet further proof, if proof were needed, that this democracy nonsense really doesn't work...

In the Facist State of Sister George this result will be nullified and Sweeney Todd will take it's rightful place.

SADM2-I first read that as 'Holes the size of Idina'-and thought 'she's not that big' oops.

Pass me the bucket also. The list generally is not great, but the fact that 'West Side Story' is awful. (and yes I did vote so feel justified in a moan!)

Lord of the Rings???

And yeah, I thought Wicked was really good but most not certainly the greatest.

People may disagree, but I'm glad to see Hairspray there.

I didn't even notice that Lord of the Rings got in the top ten. I presume people misread and though it was the Greatest Musical that felt like it lasted 30 years...

That alone is enough to cue the miltary to launch my coup d'etat (re)

Lord of the Rings? Why is Gypsy not up there? I mean it's the classic musical, often named the greatest musical of time. And Wicked? This sucks! I voted for something like The Witches of Eastwick, I thought it meant shows that made their premiere on the West End to be honest, greatest West End musical anyone?? Not Wicked!

What were the rules for this thing?

1978-2008 = 30 years

Rocky Horror Show opened in 73 and West Side Story opened in London in 58.

You could argue that both have had West End seasons in the past 30 years, but then that does render the whole thing slightly pointless...

When I opened this, I thought it was of the last 10 years...saw Wicked won and I thought, 'fair enough' it's definitely up there.

But 30 years?! I love me some Wicked, but come on. It's definitely not the best artistically...but it is amazingly popular, but not as popular as Les Mis or Phantom...so that doesn't work out either.

This list just confuses me. Where is The Lion King? That's still massive here! Avenue Q?! Grease?!

Sweeney Todd?! I wonder if any of the voters even saw the stage production.

Lord Of The Rings should most definitely not be anywhere near the top 10 list of the past 30 years?! It was beautiful to look at and some of the songs are wonderful...but come ON!

Surely a more sensible order judging by popularity and how long they've been around, would have been;

Phantom Of The Opera
Les Miserables
West Side Story
Mamma Mia
Sound Of Music
Blood Brothers
Rocky Horror
Lion King
Wicked
Billy Elliot
Rent
Hairspray
Avenue Q

and so on.

"Yet further proof, if proof were needed, that this democracy nonsense really doesn't work"

At work today it had to be explained to the 17 year old office junior, as part of the general banter, that the USA has had more than two Presidents.

That, and these DC results, are frightening.

And yet, I'm actually pleased that Sweeney made it on to the list at all.

I'm actually more in disbelief at Lord of the Rings' inclusion.

Based on what appears to be their crazy rules that if its had a production in the last 30 years it's counted then Lord of the Rings is greater than....

My Fair Lady
Cabaret
Follies
Miss Saigon
Spend Spend Spend
South Pacific
Oliver!
Anything Goes
Taboo
Billy Elliot
Eurobeat
Carousel
Sunday in the Park with George
Evita
A Little Night Music
Honk
Sunset Blvd
Tommy
Guys & Dolls
Into the Woods
The Hired Man

to name just a very few of the infintely superior productions and shows in the last 30 years....

Why is it just not renamed The 'Bunch of idiots vote online for a show they've seen recently and they liked as their brains have yet to fully finish growing' Award.

Im not a lover of lists but I will say to you, Sister Georgenna, that your list is pretty spectacular.
As for the Dress Circle list that they have published, looking at it over and over, I would now say that it is more like a list of their Top Best Selling CD's than anything anybody got to vote on.

I saw Sweeney Todd on tour a couple of years ago, with Jason Donavan, I have to say I did not like the show, but that does not mean the show was bad, I need to listen to Sweeney Todd a couple more times on my MP3 to get more of a feel for it.

I remember reading the NYT, Ben Brantley review of The Woman in White, in which he draw comparisons with Sweeney Todd, as both are set in the Dickensian era, both shows were playing Broadway at the same time, he basically slagged off WIW to big up Sweeney Todd, I know WIW was not peoples favourite ALW but I thought it was better that Sweeney Todd.

However I have not studied any of Sondheim Music and only seen the said show, something I hope to reverse in the near future.
