Major salary hike for West End musical performers in exchange for Sunday performances.
As details get closing to being smoothed over, watch how the new, as yet unannounced shows for next year start announcing Sunday matinees.

This sounds like great news - my planned monthly weekend trips to London from my GAP placement just got a whole lot more jam packed: train up Saturday morning, Sat matinee & evening shows, Sunday matinee and train back Sunday night.

Wasnt sure at first but a friend in a fringe show that does sundays mats is loving it, saying its almost like having a real weekend.

Last time it seemed it wasnt the sundays performers were bothered about but the swing ratio and other bits and pieces type payments that were being dropped. Hope everything is more agreeable this time.

I have a number of friends in New York in shows that all do Sunday shows......they absolutely love it! They walk out of that theatre at 5pm on a sunday and don't go back till 7pm on Tuesday!
This time next year it will be the norm.
Even Broadway shows that do Sunday shows sometimes change their schedules at different times of the year and revert back to the Mon to Sat run.

But what will baby jesus say......?!

(actually there are a couple of shows I would like to do sunday shows as there are a few performers I would be very happy to see condemned to hell....)

I am far to traditional to agree with Theatre opening on a Sunday, I believe on the seventh day man must spend time in Tesco's.

Just to thow a spanner in the works! If Sunday opening is so popular, why on Broadway does some shows such as Phantom still open on Monday night?

'Phantom' does change to Sundays at certain times of the year.
This isn't a strict ruling and is entirely up to the producers and theatre owners.

Phantom does Monday Nights because it's a tourist show and wants to pull out of towners in when nothing else is open!

I love the idea of sunday matinees. Only because I very rarely get time off in the week. So when planning trips to London (which is very rare these days) I can only cram in 2 shows on the Sat. So would be nice to have the optrion of a 3rd show on the Sunday as well!!

The perfect New York weekend could very soon become the perfect West End weekend!
Friday 8pm
Saturday 2pm and 8pm
Sunday 3pm
(if your lucky on Sunday, 3pm and 7pm).
This is the reason I always try and plan any business in New York prior to a weekend or at the beginning of a week.

WICKED here in Melbourne plays Wed to Sun, with two shows on a Sunday. So the cast actually do get a "weekend".

The new Wizard hasn't been reviewed, but I believe the show has taken a slight dip in the box office but continues to sell well. Might be a different story in two weeks when BILLY ELLIOTT starts previewing at Her Majesty's. PRISCILLA is closing a couple of weeks early in Sydney, on Dec 21.

Wicked Melbourne/Priscilla Sydney#17
Posted: 11/27/08 at 9:51am
Saw Wicked last Friday night in Melbourne - Bert Newton (the new Wizard) is definitely no Rob Guest and it showed -most of the choreography (if you can call it that) in Wonderful was cut and replaced with Bert stomping arond the deck. He didn't really sing the song, but did more of a Rex Harrison impersonation (speak singing it). He was wearing a god-awful grey combover wig, which did nothing but emphasize his lack of real hair. Nowhere near the amazing portrayl of the Wizard by Rob (which I was lucky enough to catch while the show was in previews) but I don't think anyone actually expects Rob's portrayl to be bettered (at least in the Aussie production).

Priscilla announced its early closing on Monday or Tuesday and the producers stated that they would rather go out with a bang than endure a hard summer. It seems that they're putting all their time and effort now into the London run, which will hopefully be a big success (especially with Tony Sheldon - who happened to go to the same school as I just graduated from - at the helm).

PS: sorry for the thread jack
