'TREASURE ISLAND' At The Haymarket WITH KEITH ALLEN

Great to see a traditional little show in town this year.
This got fab reviews this year on tour.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

So, is this the Birmingham Stage Company production then? Because on the official site the BSC isn't mentioned anywhere. If it is then everyone must go, it's fabulous!!

One of my earliest theatre memories (apart from Ginger Rogers in 'Mame') was seeing the wonderful actor Wilfred Brambell (the father in 'Steptoe And Son') doing a tour of this in the very early 70s. The production was the Mermaid Theatre production directed by Sir Bernard Mills. That production has always been seen as 'the' one and had many seasons in London and toured for years.

Went to see this tonight. First half needs tightening up but it picked up after the interval, where the lighting and projections seemed to fit much better, creating jungle from the ropes was very effective.
Allen is very engaging as LJ Silver (probs why it dragged before he arrived). The supporting cast are fine if a bit hammy but they're pirates so......
The guy playing Jack often seemed to use his narrating voice whilst interacting which was a bit annoying. But they were all very comfortable with the material.
A couple of issues with the sails for curtains (not)coming down but otherwise pretty good going for a preview.
Stalls were probably 2/3 full, fair few families which is nice to see mid week, especially as the family offers are tuesdays if I read the poster correctly.
Its a good family show.
For £20 on TKTS is was alright wouldnt want to pay more.

Yes projections, just for the ship and some birds and things.

Not as bad as the ugliest mechanical parrot known to man.

I was hoping for a more traditional staging for such a traditional story.

Forgive my ignorance, but is this a drama, a comedy, or perhaps a musical comedy? I saw it described as a drama, but then I read that it has a live band. So I'm confused...
O-ho the Wells Fargo wagon is a-comin' down the street.
Oh please let it be for me!

Its a play with couple of songs (several rounds of yo ho ho and a bottle of rum) and a fair bit of background music/sounds.
The band are not onstage throughout but get pulled on when needed.

Great News!
As of the end of November, and for the remainder of its Theatre Royal run, 'Treasure Island' is to go sailing on Sundays. Monday evening performances are being pulled and Sunday matinees at 3pm will play from Dec 1st.
Sundays are fun again!
This is the future folks!

Saw this tonight. Saving my extended thoughts for the blog but the question I had afterwards was "why?" 100% forgettable, nothing truly great or awful about it just bland.
