'High School Musical'#1

As predicted this show has secured a London home. It opens in June at the Apollo Hammersmith. Great to see its not to take one of our beloved West End theatres. Its an 6 week season but i got a feeling this gonna live forever!!!

Have you had HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL -ON ICE yet? True, there is now a touring "On Ice" version....I just thought of something very unsuitable to say here, but I'll resist.

I have a feeling that if GWTW flops then HSM might go to the New London especially if Stage Entertainment (who produce the show with Disney) buys the New London off RUG.

BTW, don't Stage Entertainment own the Shaftesbury now?

I honestly dont think they will look fro a permanent West End home. This is the kind of show that will tour and tour and tour and tour. Every theatre on its initial tour has sold out 98% months ahead of the show arriving and i know of 3 that have rebooked for 2009. Join me in praying it doesnt come into the real West End.

I wouldn't be surprised if HSM transferred to the West End. I can't imagine production costs being particularly high, even if they just book for a short run and then keep extending it due to 'popular demand', kids love it, hence why the tours sell so quickly. Though it is debatable whether parents will be willing to take their kids to London when they could just see the tour, maybe they'll try and drum up some publicity of sorts about the casting to get around that.

I don't really get everyone's aversion to HSM, it's not great, but it's popular so it's not going anywhere, and I expect the production values will be pretty high and the cast quite good, but we're all very pessimistic about it. Maybe after the third film it'll die down (NOT).

The UK will have now two separate productions of the show.
The tour that will continue until Christmas this year and a totally separate production for the London season at the Apollo Hammersmith. The Hammersmith production, not being part of the tour, will now be able to extend its season beyond its initial 6 week season depending on ticket sales. Thats a 6 year season then i guess!!! They are bound to run it until at least September to cover the school holidays.
Its surprising that during the London run the tour actually stops in Wimbledon for a week also.

I saw an ad last month in THE STAGE for an audition for a tenor aged 16-19 for HSM tour. Cringe.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

What I am crossing my fingers and praying doesn't happen is this.

That they open High School Musical on Broadway. I can see Disney doing it considering the fact that they have a major Broadway branch of the Disney company and it will make money that is for sure.

But, any hopes of this becoming a new Golden Age of Broadway will quickly die if this show comes to the great white way.
