Popular. That's exactly it. The fact that awards which rely on public voting can still claim to recognise the "best" production, actor, actress and director is laughable.
Just wait for the upcoming WOS Awards. As if the combined talents of Tracie Bennett and Elena Roger stand a chance against Sheridan Smith. As if anyone cares about David Thaxton's performance when he is up against Ramin Karimloo.

ETA: I'm not saying Smith and Karimloo aren't giving good performances. I'm saying that it doesn't even really matter how good they are and how deserving the performance is of an award.

Online popularity contests such as this and the forthcoming WOS awards are generally more indicative of who has the most active online fanbase rather than anything else. It is interesting to think The 39 Steps has an overactive online fanbase, but there's a cynical (and probably not inaccurate) part of my brain that suggests it benefits from the Wicked fanbase, either because Wicked fans went along to support Dianne Pilkington and were very impressed, or - as I suspect - they just voted for Dianne Pilkington without seeing her and threw in extra 39 Steps votes because they didn't have any other opinions and figured they might as well.

I am a little surprised to see how active the online fanbase for Love Never Dies has been though!

With popularity contests such as these, I wish the organisers would produce the longlist themselves, before allowing the public to whittle it down to a shortlist (or even produce a shortlist themselves!), before allowing everyone to vote for their winners. In the current form of "anyone can nominate anyone and anyone can vote for anyone and may the best show with the most active online fanbase win!", it's impossible to get any sort of fair result, unless you come right out and call it an Online Popularity Contest.

Surprised the 39 steps did so well. I liked the show but there are better plays out there. Like some of you have said though it's down to fanbases!

Awwww we came 3rd i think for best fringe/regional play

Im shocked at all the Love Never Dies wins, however i think Sheridan deserved to win, and i think we will see her win at many more awards shows.

Ugly Duckling, I agree completely. I find it disgusting that Tamsin Outhwaite ranked as low as she did, when in terms of acting she outranked most of the other contenders.

I don't even think Ramin should have necessarily won best actor. Yes, he performs well and is an amazing singer, but I don't think his ACTING is the best out of them all...
