Saw a tiny clip of the Making of Chitty and at one point there is a STUNNING set on the Palladium stage.

It has a red floor and giant structures hiding the arch.

Is it the King and I?
Who produced it?

Thanks

In 1979 The King and I played at the Palladium (with Yul Brynner and Virginia McKenna), but I can't tell if this is the set you saw.
Would part of the set still be there after almost 30 years or so ?

Yes it is King and I

There is a lovely shot of the set in a book I have about london theatres, I thought i had it scanned but apparently not.

It was designed by the guy that did Chitty, Anthony Ward I think?

Just remembered that from 2000 till 2002 there was a revival there with Elaine Paige.

That production was followed by Chitty Chitty ... so the sets could still have been there.

It was produced by David Ian

It would have been the revival of King and I. It was the production that transferred from Broadway, which opened in 1996 with Donna Murphy. This production actually originated from Australia

It was a fabulous, lavish production, but starred a sadly too old Elaine Paige. I liked her performance but couldn't quite feel she really was too old to play that part.

It was co-produced by David Ian for Clear Channel with the original Australian producers.

@Justin D - actually, the King and I sets were by Brian Thomson and costumes were by Roger Kirk.

I always get the designers confused.

I loved how they had a staircase from the box into the stage.

Josie Lawremce played Anna for the closing of the run and she was brilliant.
The set was stunning, a lot grander than when it played Broadway a few seasons before.

I met Piggy Paige in New York about 8 months before she played it at the Palladium and I asked her what brought her to New York and her reply was 'Im here for a costume fitting for the London transfer of 'The King And I'.
My reply, tho only in my head, was 'what are you playing dear? The Queen Mother'!
