Off to see the wonderful Clive Mantle in the Tommy Cooper semi biog tonight. I saw the original London production at the Garrick and it was simply brilliant. It will be interesting to see Mr Mantles interpretation of the piece.
There have been lots of rewrites etc and the show has had some great reviews on its tour so far. Strangely, the show has sold out on many of its dates but in the ones that haven't sold the house has ben very, very small- as few as 100?
Its due a short season in the West End at the end of the year.
I am a great fan of the late, great Tommy Cooper.

I hear it's not doing great business in Cheltenham.

The tour is greatly scaled-down, isn't it?

It must be to do one nighters. In the West End it had a pretty full set. I've never heard of a show selling out 100% in many cities then nothing the next night.
Very much looking forward to it whatever the house.
Swansea has always had a big reputation for variety and music hall so if the citizens aren't too old they may well be out in force tonight.

It is 26 years on Thurs that he died live on TV on 'Live From Her Majesty's' in front of 14M.
What away to go!

Darn...I thought this thread was going to be about the elusive ABBA song.

I really hope this does well. Many years go Tommy Cooper was the support for The Police at a concert on Tooting Common. My brother has a photo of the both of them (in the pub opposite).
His neice stills run the family magic show in Eastbourne nd his local holiday cottage still attracts visitors.
I hope it comes to the Devonshire Park - he is really loved to this day. I remember going to one of his ITV shows at Teddington - a really nice bloke.

What a great night of good old British entertainment this was.
I saw the London production with Jerome Flynn and that was truely a wonderful trip back in time to the good old days of variety. Jerome Flynn did an eerily accurate, award winning, performance as the great comic.
This new touring production is very much scaled down but on viewing, with its cheap cheap set it actually portrays how cheap and tacky the theatre variety shows of the past actually were- even in the West End.
The Garrick production and first national tour displayed the TV shows of Tommy Cooper more than that of the stage, big glitzy sets etc.

Clive Mantle, a great TV and stage actor, now takes on the oversize suit and shoes of Mr Cooper and he excels in every way- he, for me, captured the original clumsiness and awkwardness of Cooper more so than Jerome Flynn did and thats saying something.
The show is basically a reporducution of the best and funniest of Tommy Copers act. The first act is a show in itself displaying Coopers timeless routines of magic tricks going drastically wrong and some of the oldest jokes in the book.
The opening of act two is set in a dessing room just prior to a performance and is structured to let us see in real life what an arrogant, selfish drunk, the real Mr Cooper was. This then switches back again to a very funny final 20 mins of Cooper at the top of his game.
Its some time since i cried with pure laughter in a theatre.

Some of the timeless routines we saw recreated last night...

Tommy Cooper is Dame Judi Dench's favorite performer!

Mikey, sadly it isn't playing Eastbourne but there are a few dates kind of close in the area or towards London that you may be able to get to -worth checking the dates out.
Dartford 3rd June.
Epsom 20th May.
Worthing 21st May.
Crawley 27th April
Kingston Upon Thames 6th, 7th and 8th May
...are a few for you.
Well worth it.
